Was any station in Nashville playing The Smiths in the mid 80s? I am 53 and was just listening to KDF then, don't think I heard them there.
 
It's possible WKDA played the Smiths. The debut album from the band was released in February of 1984 but by August, WKDA was referenced as being an oldies format. So there was a window of several months where they could have been played.

100.1 as WWRB "Rebel 100" played Morrissey's debut solo single, as shown on chart here in 1988.
