so what is everyone's take on the news of the payola scandal in new york?

do you believe the investigation will spread nation wide?

without naming people or stations do you believe there are some stations in alabama that you would suspect could be getting payola???
______________

Someone broke the 11th Commandment ("Don't get caught") for sure.

Yes. It's an instant grandstanding opportunity for every state AG who wants to run for office in '06 or '08.

Yes. All of them. Well, OK, it doesn't work for news-talk, sports, or oldies. Public radio's probably clean. I doubt all the AM gospel stations accept payola, either, but I'd bet on the majority of them having done so.

I've never gotten why it's even illegal. Was it illegal at all before someone decided that that new-fangled "rock 'n roll" must be stopped? I fail to see the "crime" here. It's not like radio would suddenly start playing gabs of challenging independent music if payola didn't exist.

(And no, I've never accepted any. I'm just a DXer who's never worked in radio.)

> >clitchemoth since you've never worked in radio why don't you stay out of the discussion rather than chiming in that every radio station is on the take. It really makes you sound stupid.

Well, I'm not in radio...but I know that there are probably stations still on the dole (even if indirectly) from record companies. What's so stupid about acknowledging what's true?
______________

What? Stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night? I'll tell you what's "so stupid about acknowledging what's true". People that make a stupid assumption that they just "know " that "the majority" of stations are taking payola. What a stupid statement! Guess if you watched a lot of Tom Cruise movies it means that you just "know" what he eats for supper. I really can't fathom why people come onto and post on a message board that have no working knowledge of an industry.

Take a look see for yourself.........

http://somafm.com/payola/payola2.pdf

For the record, I'm not accusing them of anything. Link speaks for itself.

This time you didn't have to say a word. They're the only Alabama station I saw mentioned (and more than once), and I scrolled through all 59 pages.

Wonder if anything will come of it...and I wonder if there WERE more 'Bama stations involved, and just not mentioned (I saw one notation for "Citadel stations" instead of one station, so that might mean a few more stations in Birmingham, minus their newest acquisitions).
______________

Maybe I've just gone blind, I can't see where I said ALL stations were taking the pay and prizes. But I know that there are stations doing so. Just like I know not all black people are lazy, not all white people have two left feet, and not all Asians are good at math and eat rice.

And concerning people w/o actual radio experience posting and speculating here, may I kindly refer you to that cliche' about Noah's ark and the Titanic...
______________

Guess I'm just a stupid radio guy, since I'm not familiar with the Noah's ark cliche'. If you'd read the post by clichemouth(there's that word again), which is what I was referring to,it clearly states "all of them". It's all about you , isn't it? Please feel free to post all you want, X.

And free to post I shall feel, Landecker. I guess we just disagree.

And just so you know: The ark was built by amateurs, while the Titanic was built by professionals.

(Now you're less of a stupid radio guy than you were before!)

Eh, easy enough to do when there's 59 pages worth of material and you're likely just skimming through. :)

What I find interesting is the Cumulus stations that were mentioned... WHOT, for example. I've always suspected Jan was up to something.
