THE SOUND OF SUMMER 2012

Several topics have gone around on which song is the summer song of 2012. I think its safe to say at this point that "Call Me Maybe" is that song. I think the interesting part of summer 2012 at CHR, though, was how women ruled the roost. I think its actually more appropriate to say that there was a sound of summer 2012.

Going back to May and the songs that have reached #1 on the radio airplay chart, we have "Call Me Maybe", "Wide Awake", "Lights", current #1 "Give Your Heart a Break" and Maroon 5's "Payphone". Save for Adam Levine and company, this summer was dominated by female solo artists- and this doesn't even include other big hits that didn't hit #1 but were close David Guetta/Sia- "Titanium", Rihanna "Where Have You Been" and Pink "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)".

This summer marked a stark contrast to last summer when both Pitbull and LMFAO were vying for song of the summer. Thoughts on why solo female artists had such a strong summer?

CHR in general is overly female dominated these days. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Rebecca Black really began this trend.

Rebecca Black had close to zero impact at CHR. Yes, it has always been female dominated, but this summer lacked songs from male artists in a way that was unseen- there was almost complete dominance of the format. It most likely plays into all of our complaining about the lack of balance at CHR. If there was more pop/rock or alternative on the charts there would be more guys hitting #1. The years biggest #1s with male artists (Gotye and Fun.) were both alternative crossovers.
