The Sound...sounds like "Jack Lite"

After berating the Sound pretty good last week I thought I would try them out again in the all-important Morning Drive slot this morning, resisting my usual urge to flip the channel at the first sign of a song I can do without (life is too short to listen to music you don't like, but I digress).

One can really tell how PPM is affecting the station. A complete absence of new music for an entire half hour plus, and then they played a new track from the very familiar band REM. And the sum of all of the songs they did play sounded like a lite version of either the current Jack format or the old KLSX classic rock format. Specifically this morning, there were Stones, Doobies, and Black Crowes among other familiar names. They are clearly afraid of the station being tuned out when a PPM is nearby so only the very familiar from now on in terms of either song or artist recognition.

Such a tremendous waste. They had an opportunity to build something really fresh (clearly maximizing $ was not the motive for this station in the first place), but they put it on life support before it ever got to live. Even KSCA and KMPC-FM/KEDG had their brief moments in the sun. Not this place.

Moments before "The Sound" was around a lot of us speculated Bonneville was going to bring about Los Angeles' first FM news/talk station. Given the dismal "Sound" on 100.3 combined with what is appearing to be a growing lack of news on KFWB, and to a lesser extent KNX, if Bonneville is wise, and in many respects outside of L.A. they are, some suit will see there is becoming a growing need for a news/talk FM station in L.A. Yes, L.A. is not the best market for news/talk, but even in L.A. a news/talk format on FM, if done right, would surely bring in lots of needed cash as opposed to Bonneville's current format on 100.3.

As has been noted, across the country many FM stations that flipped to news/talk have seen their ratings double and this appears to be the latest trend in radio.

Bonneville wouldn't need to look far for new people given the events of this last year plenty of talent is available and looking for work.

Unfortunately, I have to agree that The Sound has lost its way. I happened onto them when they first launched and they really did have a refreshing blend of unusual old and interesting new stuff. But this weekend I spent several hours painting a fence with the boombox tuned to 100.3. As noted, I heard mainly oldies that wouldn't be out of place on Jack, KLSX, KROQ, even KRTH. Every so often they would make a big deal out of playing something newer. That's not the mix of music that's going to draw me back, guys. Weren't you ever on the college station?

Also, it didn't seem like the jocks were looking at what had been played earlier. Within just a few hours I heard 2 cuts from Who's Next; that's sloppy. And if you're going to play stuff by the usual suspects like the Eagles, at least look for B sides or go to side 2 of the greatest hits CD. By its demise I thought KSCA had gone too far in the singer/songwriter Lilith Fair direction, and that's not what I want from The Sound, but they should really listen to KCRW in the evening for some song ideas. They are stale.
