I think it's bad form to log on any website and anonymously criticize something without offering a possible solution, but one thing at the awards show last night had been niggling at me since I heard it.

Lazlo took a poke at Larry Nelson that was in really bad taste.

I've been in radio, on the air for over 24 years in this market. I know how your mouth can get ahead of you all too well and I feel anyone in a rock format who hasn't said something offensive, stupid or wrong at least a few times isn't pushing the envelope enough to be truly entertaining. However, this bit was taped and the audience very specific. Lazlo had to have known that, being up for this award, posthumously, there was a great possibility that a close relative, friend and/or ex-co-worker of Larry's would be in that room. Larry died just last October. He was a genuine person, a truly nice guy on and off the air and he wasn't saccharine about it, either.
I like a good dead person joke as much as the next guy, but this left a bad taste in my mouth.

It was the absolute wrong time, the absolute wrong place, and absolute wrong audience and was absolutely over-played.

Lazlo, what in heaven's name were you thinking? That was entirely classless and unnecessary.

Good for you for saying something!

Larry Nelson was and is Seattle radio royality and anyone NOT showing respect for him is truly a you know what. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the way The Soundies have evolved. Used to be they'd throw us in a fancy room at big round tables with grown up food and alcohol and expect us to behave while they doled out the awards. It never worked. They solved it by putting us in an movie theatre like auditorium where there's no alcohol allowed. That way we're all forced to pay attention for a bit while The Soundies are handed out. By the way, it was executed better this year than ever before. The video taping of the nominees was done well and with humor. Loved it. With the exception of Lazlo of course. Came across like an egotistical, insensitive idiot. How stupid is the guy? His sensitivity chip is broken. Not funny.

There was an audible groan when Lazlo said, "Gee, I hope we don't lose to a dead guy" or words to that effect. The award (Best Local Talent) was won by Bob Rivers who went out of his way to praise Larry; he even said in the taped bit beforehand that "I hope Larry Nelson wins this award". Now there's a class guy.

Thanks Shark for posting the comment. Lazlo, you have sunk low!!

If you had known Larry Nelson, you never would have said this.

It's a sad day when so called entertaining has come to this. The
Seattle Radio community should let him know!!!

Maybe Lazlo can get on here tell us why we shouldn't be outraged!

On a different Soundies topic: Kent and Alan taped a bit that took a shot at this board ;D Alan comes out of the men's room wiping his hands and Kent says, "Hey Alan, did you wash up?" Alan says, "Well, Radio-Info says we're all washed up!" OK, I guess you had to be there.

Now that's funny! Excuse my ignorance, but how are these nominees determined? I thought with the production pieces, its basically some guy/gal thinking something they produced is worthy of an award so they submit it. Is it the same for talent? Do you say to yourself, hey I think my show is great even though the ratings don't indicate that, and then you just go ahead and submit your name? Not meant as a poke towards Lazlo, I just don't know how the nominees are determined.

but how are these nominees determined?

They send all of the spots to a select (as many people in the market as they can) group to vote on them. then the finalists are judged by a commitee.

The is sad at every level, if Lazlo actually made fun of Larry Nelson. I hope that isn't the case. Nice to hear Bob Rivers had class and Kent and Alan have a sense of humor about the ribbing they get on this board and others. Larry Nelson was a class act, so are Rivers, K@A, Ichabod and most of the talent in Seattle. It is one thing to have attitude on the air, another to have it among your peers. Very sad.

No, he didn't make fun of him, he just did a bit in which he said "You're kidding, we're up against a dead guy? and he hasn't even been on the air in how many years?" And if he'd have left it at that, it might not have been so bad, but he went on about it. I'm giving him the benefit of doubt and assuming he was just trying to be...funny. But he had to have known someone close to Larry would have been there in case he had won, to accept. I'm not sure if it's more Lazlo's error or those in charge of putting together the videos.

dominic, most awards aren't determined. Stations and agencies pay fees to submit pieces and then they're voted on by groups in broadcasting in and out of the market. I believe the awards like the Crystal Soundie Don Riggs so deserved and won this year are those decided on by the PSRBA.

That Kent and Alan bit was funny!

Yeah, the bar prices were a bit much and what was that "food"? I know we're a rabid bunch when it comes to the consumables, but those tiny spanikopita and dipped berries lasted all of 10 minutes and then there was no more.

I think the theatre setting is great for the awards and making us wait for food and drinks is best, but I'd liked to have had more tables in that area, more places to sit and chat and more real food. It began at 5:30, right? And some lingered for hours. Etiquette alone suggests you feed people when the event is during those hours. Serving alcohol unfettered by anything but cost and minimal pinkie finger food may be downright illegal.

And poor Miss Soundie must have been freezing in that hanky she was wearing!

I wasn't there, but have talked to some who were. The problem I have with Lazlo's bit is that it was taped, it wasn't a accident. You crossed the line. I don't like to throw rocks from a glass house, but Lazlo, you need to know that you made fun of a guy who gave a ton to this community. I know Larry brought joy to my moms life and many others as listners. His talent beyond question, but more important is what he gave back. Knowing Larry was just a bonus.

Lazlo, yeah, you can just blow us off. Who cares?

I do.

Actually, the better description would be: Laslo threw a wad of fecal matter from his outhouse.

Here's a guy who wants to make sure he surrounds himself with the talent-less. He has gotten rid of the core talent at the End. The only talent he really trusts on his own show is his WIFE. Anyone else with talent, buh bye.

So in the case of the Soundies, no props from him to other talent, just put downs.

But, that, my firends, is Lazlo.

Larry Nelson had talent and undisputed coolness. Lazlo is a trainwreck and why we all now go to KEXP or KGRG to get our modern/alternative fix.

End of story

finally, it's agreed that laslo is a wad!about time!here here!!

You know as I listen to this, I've got to comment on the some of the nominees. First off, Ken & Alan aren't my cup of tea but I give a ton of respect to them for the longevity they have had in this market. As for Bob Rivers, like K&A, the show really doesn't do anything for me. But it is obvious, he along with every member of his team are a class act. As for Lazlo and his crew, I'm just the type of guy his show should be targetting and I must say in the 20 hours I've listened to his show since he signed on in Seattle, I have not laughed once. I keep telling myself maybe I just caught them having an off-hour 20 different times, but it just seems that's not the case. Sadly enough I found Marconi funnier than I do Lazlo and his crew, and they only did 38 shows before Entercom Seattle pulled the plug. Either corporate managers at Entercom are too busy dealing with bigger issues or they just don't simply care as much about the end as they used to.
