The Sound's A to Z Labor Day Countdown

Now, this is truly great Labor Day programming. The Sound's A to Z countdown, playing 2,000 songs from their library, a lot of classics you never hear on the radio anymore. Everything's Is Coming Our Way, Santana,-- just one of the highlights and that was just one of the tunes in the E's! You truly cannot predict what song is going to come next. They are just up to the I's tonight.. check it out. This is not just a Labor Day Weekend Countdown, it has been going on all week.

What's a holiday weekend, without a specialty. Great stuff!
Nothing listed for KRTH on their website yet.

"truly great Labor Day programming"

You don't get around much (on the infinite dial [read: The Internet]). All the so-called "classics you never hear on the radio anymore" are played from time to time on other over the air radio stations, just not in this market.

Tell you what, fly. After the A-Z is over, post a list of maybe 20-30 tracks they played that you feel belong in the unique category and we'll judge how unique those tracks are.

Now it really does seem like Fly is a shill.

Every post he/she makes is like a PR release by the Sound.

Doesn't mean the A-Z isn't a brilliant concept never before conceived of in radio history, because it is. (eyes roll)

Fly, now you have disappointed me.

I was giving you so much credit for going mano a mano in the role of fresh new underdog with the Great David Eduardo, with you lighting up this board with repeated bravado-filled posts demonstrating your full-fledged knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the LA market as well as those brilliant insights into the local rock radio scene, and most of all, your favorite client, KSWD. But in one last fit of board rage, you let us all know what is wrong with this board, where we could all stick it, and you wouldn't be partying with the likes of us anymore and you were going to start posting on a real board. I totally saluted you. I always say go out in a blaze of glory, and you certainly did.

But after all that, you are back just one week later??

It's not like you had a lot of credibility to begin with, but what you had has now gone down the drain. I'm so depressed.

Reminds me of "IT" when satellite radio used to do that.

Except for IT had well over 20,000 songs and was great radio for weeks on end. That was back when XM was relevant and provided actual expanded playlists on all of their decade channels. But that is a different topic for a different board.

By the Sound's own admission, although they certainly are playing some gems, it doesn't even represent all of their on air-library - Rita said so on the air just last night. But I always enjoy the format regardless of whether KLOS, KLSX, or KSWD, does it. It has got me to tune in, especially when I am in the gym working out.

IMHO this is NOT the Sound's regular on-air library. It's special programming and I seriously doubt you'll hear a lot of this stuff after it's over.

I took Rita's quote to mean that not all tracks that are on the regular on-air library are necessarily on the list of 2,000. This would make sense given that they are playing many tracks that are not on the regular playlist.

They were kind enough to play all 17 minutes of "Inna Gadda da Vida" by Iron Butterfly this morning when I was listening at the gym. Thanks, uh, I guess.

Guess they're thin on staff because their Chief Engineer, billed as Kevin the Engineer, is on midnight to six and man this is NOT how a major market should sound.

one thing for sure...he sounds better than a few "air personalities' on that station. I know this because I work there. I do agree on one thing you mentioned.....the L.A. market doesn't sound anything like it used to...."casper milktoast" and all the other lightweight clones that are working these days....would still be calling bingo numbers at a ramada inn...I remember when we were called "air talent"...because you had to have it...before you earned the right to work in L.A..

That's because there's no money in radio anymore. The really good talent that we used to hear is for the most part, on the beach.

If the "really good talent" is "on the beach", why can't they accept pay cuts? Isn't that better than not having a job?

Apparently some do & some don't need or want to.

First of all....ENTERTAINMENT is the key. Give the listener a reason to listen.....use your "talent" to ENTERTAIN. A programmer with "huevos" knows how to make it happen. I once had a P.D. say "your here to entertain the listener....not the P.D. or the GM".

Actually a lot of the great talent on the beach can't get arrested. If no one wants you, doesn't matter that you'll take less money. Can't explain why good people can't get hired, it's today's radio mystery.

It's a mystery to me as well. Lots of good talent want in & can't get back in.
