The South Rising In Birmingham

The other site has this for a new headline. Too cheap to subscribe. Are they talking about The Magic City? What's the dirt?

Will Clear Channel allow this with WSTH South 106.1 overlapping about 25% of Cumulus' WZRR coverage area?

The 60 dbu contours of the two stations do not overlap. And the stations are in separately defined MSAs.

Where'd u find that info, Zach? Nice catch. I wish I had kept my premium membership with RadioInsight, but I deleted it, thinking I wouldn't need it any longer. Do you think "South" will be some type of classic country format or just a rebranding of country WZRR?

Never mind...I see that the flip occurred at 5 pm today. Is this straight ahead classic rock? I've seen info on Twitter it is southern rock/country.

According to the other site, the format is a mixture of Classic Rock, Country and Adult Alternative. It looks like The Eagle has some much needed competition. They were becoming very staled anyway.

P.S. I look for this new station to do very well.

A friend passed the link on to me; no idea where he got the info.

Part of me wonders if this is just some sort of stopgap thing until a more permanent format rolls out. It seems excessively half-baked, poorly executed and not altogether coherent. There's no Facebook page, no content on the website and the only interactive avenue right now seems to be Twitter.

On the other hand, this is Cumulus so I expect nothing less than half-baked and half-hearted executions.

Could be a placeholder for something else. Remember Cumulus' Warm 100 format in Atlanta that briefly materialized and suddenly disappeared into oblivion? I listened tonight to the new format and as you said, very disorganized if this is supposed to be permanent. No Facebook page that I could find, and oddly enough, very little listener interest being reported on social media about the change.

My quick observations are that the format, with something like the first hour playlist (on Hangout Fest weekend, to boot), combined with the name "South" (which is also what we call The University of South Alabama) would work on a 100,000 watt signal covering the Mobile DMA. To bad no signals are available. The low man on the Mobile city grade totem pole is iHeart's Kiss 107.3 and I expect them to keep a Top40 format.

Complementary station to The Jag 99.5?
Perhaps a good format for WJGR-LP 97.1 to model after?

Been listening to more of it. It's Y'all FM done southern style. Plan and simple, they're playing a wide and engaging mix of musical styles and singers who have their roots in the south. I think I'm going to like this new station, once they get everything smoothed out. .

P.S. Just heard Lionel Richie singing, as I post this.

B.T.W. I look for all those displaced Y'all FM listeners to tune in and enjoy, once they hear of it.

For us Redneck AAA/Southern Rock/Classic Rock/Classic Country/Outlaw Country fans, this is a FM dream. As I recall, it's never really caught on in any market.
Maybe Nashville or some college has a similar, thriving, station?

Hearing CCR's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" now on the internet. Check the map, guys. Although they sounded Southern, CCR was a California band. The Fogertys are Berkeley natives and the band was formed there.

If this is a Cumulus placeholder, at least the type of music promised on the web page is being played. The "Warm" stunt started as Christmas music, but the web page promised Anne Murray, Air Supply and the Carpenters. They were never played and Warm turned out to be a typical Hot AC before the real format was revealed.

Been checking them out some more. Kinda makes me think of Birmingham Mountain radio. It looks like B-Ham now has a 100,000 watt voice for Americana styled music. I wish this station all the best.

P.S. Like what I'm still hearing. The music is very different.

The other website is reporting that Leland (of Leland Live fame on Superstation 101) blabbed on Facebook that he'll be hosting the 2-6 pm slow on the new talk 99.5. So, that solves that mystery. His Facebook post has been removed, though, so I can't verify it for myself. Insight is saying it'll flip Tuesday.

Cumulus has http://talk995.com/ registered but it's not active yet.

Just couldn't leave good enough alone. I was starting to like the new music mix. Oh well, can't have everything you want.
