Haven't had much time to see if any posts have been popping up for the fantastic work being done by K-Love's local facilities in North Dartmouth MA, Providence or Westerly RI...or the incredible stuff on AM1220 Shine Radio (WSTL/Providence), but this longtime broadcaster is both excited by their appearance on the landscape over the past few years and mindful of the groundwork I tried to lay over 20 years to bring the sound and ministry of this format to the area.
During a short 1992-1994 period I had a show on AM1220 Providence when it was WRIB called THE CREATION STATION featuring 2 one-hour shows in the AM and PM which had the contemporary Christian hits, interviews with the music makers and a news roundup featured. Got a little kudo as well durng that time from the Birthing area at Women & Infants Hospital during that time who wrote to tell me the nurses would tape the show and play it back throughout the day, that it brought a lighter feel and hope to all who were there.
The fight to get this music here was like me battling a thousand Goliaths. Well, I wasn't the one to do it to this scale, but I'm comforted by the fact it is on daily, a huge blessing to anyone who hears, and is some the best music heard on the radio today. At some point in the day either station is on, in the car or at home, and as always, the sounds and the injection of spiritual thoughts and teachings gently sprinkled do wonders.
These days my work is in the Oldies and entertainment venues for gatherings, but in this work God is never far from my lips or prayer from my motives. I'm helping preserve an important piece of Americana by working to bring back what made Radio great in the 50s and 60s, including some of those songs that got us as a generation to think, remember, pray and change. This little Sunday show now effects the entire area where I broadcast with a 'refuge', a place to open up, care, have fun and be a part of a growing community in a place where community still thrives. Online, this show has a growing following too.
I am blessed to work at WINY/Putnam CT with a group of people who gather the audience to raise funds for people in need in a variety of ways, working with Churches, civic groups and agencies to meet critical needs. They've been doing it as a secular station for years and continue to add to the momentum of care and concern. Christian radio's best effect is the heart of outreach, not just with the Gospel, but with the most basic and practical touch through both the kind words and truth plus hands that reach to meet need. The K-Love/Shine presence has changed this area so much by being basic in its reach with the music people can't help but love, and the heart and hands that minister much and can't seem to do enough.
It is truly breaking down the darkness and resistence so long overshadowing the area I call home. It is radio's great treasure.
If you have not heard their broadcasts and are not from the area, hunt over to the web:

Be blessed in all, and as I have learned over 32 years in this business, continue to do the work (as the voice and hands in ministry) and never cease, for God will get the increase and the darkness will be obliterated in an ever increasing brilliance of Light.
