The Spanish-English AC Scoreboard

This is the second month that La Exitosa 98.7 WEPN-FM is listed in the New York ratings, holding steady from last month. I figured I'd take a look at how the format is doing these days around the U.S.

1) WEPN-FM New York ............. La Exitosa 98.7 ........... Emmis .................. #22, steady

12) WMIA-FM Miami .................. Magic 93.9 .................. iHeart .................... #5, up from last month

25) KXXM San Antonio ............... Mix 96.1 ...................... iHeart ..................... #17, down from last month

29) WOEX Orlando ...................... Hits 96.5 ...................... Cox .......................... #13, down from last month

52) WZJZ Fort Myers .................. Magic 100.1 ............... iHeart ...................... #14 tie, up from last month

As I have said over and over, this is a format for middle and upper class Latin Americans who came to Miami to flee unrest or socialist governments in places like Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Those people grew up "back home" listening to stations that played pop music in English and went to bilingual schools.

The "American" hits in those countries are not exactly the same as gold based AC stations that target born Americans program. And there is an appeal to a station "just for them". And the Spanish-English approach matches the stations they listened to before coming to Miami.

That group does not exist in great numbers in any other city.

Oh, even in Orlando that AC format beats the SBS station!

Last time I checked, there are quite a couple successful Bilingual ACs even in low class areas like Elias Pina and El Seibo in the Dominican Republic. In my opinion, the problem with WEPN is the lack of promotion. KXXM on the other hand is aiming towards middle aged Hispanic women who didn't grow up with singers like Celine Dion but instead with artists La Mafia.
