Looks like what Hammond giveth, Cumulus taketh away. The Frog is back down to a 15 share. Of the top guys, WIMZ was the only one to post any kind of gain. Q gets four tenths of a point. I wonder if WIMZ can get itself in a position to overtake its light, breezy sister with bits and pieces of frog leg fuel...

Oh well, I'll know more when an agency friend's fax machine starts humming with unsolicited rankers.

Interesting book. WIMZ making modest gains. Looks like we will soon have a closer horse race than in many years. WIVK down to a 15 share is something unthinkable in the days of yore.

WIVK-FM Country Cumulus 15.3 18.9 17.7 19.2 15.4
WJXB-FM AC South Central 8.8 10.8 11.3 11.6 10.5
WIMZ-FM Classic Rock South Central 7.9 7.5 6.9 7.0 9.4
WWST-FM Top 40/M Journal 8.2 8.4 7.5 6.3 9.4
WOKI-FM N/T Cumulus 5.3 4.8 4.5 5.1 4.8
WCYQ-FM Country Journal 3.7 3.3 3.3 3.4 3.8
WKHT-FM Top 40/R Journal 8.1 5.9 6.7 5.3 3.8
WNOX-FM N/T Cumulus 2.6 2.8 2.6 2.7 2.7
WNFZ-FM Active Rock South Central 3.0 3.9 3.6 3.2 2.4
WQJK-FM Adult Hits Blue Ridge 1.3 2.1 1.3 1.8 1.6
WNML-FM Sports Cumulus 1.4 1.7 2.2 2.5 1.5
WNML-AM Sports Cumulus 1.4 0.5 1.5 1.0 0.7

These are the corrected numbers, WWST Star 102.1 is tied for 3rd place with 103.5 WIMZ.

I see that WOKI with what I consider to be a horrible signal is beating the daylights out of WNOX with its warp drive signal. Maybe Pirkle should take that station in another direction.

Like I say, WNOX is a wasted format on that killer signal. 94.3's format on that stick makes sense and X 94.3 would be better on the WNOX stick. Easily done. News-Talk is a 7.5 K or less FM stick at best.

Taking out WNOX, which apparently Arbitron still has listed as Cumulus per Unknown's post, here's how the big three shake out:

South Central 23.9
Cumulus 22.4
Journal 17

Looks like South Central is now the number one group in town.

Looking at the numbers through out each rating period. I would like to see a Hot AC which is a niche format in the market go after B 97.5's 25-54 women demos, A Classic Country format on the FM side to take out WIVK's upper demo 35-64, a good strong Top 40 station with a signal to go after both Star and Hot, and a good Classic Hits station with a rock lean format to take 103.5 WIMZ down a notch or two!! Then you would have real radio in this market. :)

True. This book isn't a trend. But South Central is now the #1 group in town. With the #2 group not buying the summer survey, South Central can keep these bragging rights all the way through the first of the year and into the start of the 2013 annual buys. And how realistic is it that anyone is going to change formats to go after anyone else? Somebody could go dig up James A., but they'd hurt themselves with all of the centrifugal force in that box. And good luck getting any useful conversation out of him.

'IVK does seem vulnerable right now. I don't know what Journal's financial situation is, but they aren't at their ownership limit in the market. If they've got the cash, they should try & persuade Pirkle to sell (or at least lease) 100.3 to them and put Q93 on that 100kw blowtorch. They could then use 93.1 to flank as a classic country station, or use it for classic hits, which is a hole in the market.

We already have a Hot AC in Knoxville.

What Mr. Pickle said is true. I've been incredibly wrong before, but who sees anything in the way of useful market changes between now and the end of the year? Two of the three groups seem more interested in protecting what they have. The other one is so worried about making cuts they don't care if they lose five dollars a year to save a dollar right this minute.

The only thing I hear right now is a deafening clicking noise. It's the suitcase latches of millions of dollar bills packing up in preparation for their march across town and up Sharps Ridge.

What station is Hot AC? B 97.5 is a Mainstream AC as well as 106.1 the River.

Tennessee Cowboy, who is James A? I apologize, I just moved to East Tenn this past winter and don't know all the players, shakers, and movers in the market.

James A. was James A. Dick, founder of Dick Broadcasting. He took a daytime-only AM and built it into a powerhouse group that included making WIVK-FM the dominant station for four decades. Now deceased, his testicular fortitude was buried with him along with the hopes and dreams of his former employees.

He had a daughter-in-law named Carlotta. She wanted to be called Lotta. Mail came in for her at the station. Like any other station in the world, there was a very low level of maturity among the on-air staff. They knew that their amusement was best left concealed. I am not making this up.

I think of her every time there's an Austin Powers movie on the satellite listings.

106.1 is Hot AC. They aren't soft by any means. They're on the edge of CHR.

Yeah, 106.1 The River is definitely Hot AC (not mainstream AC). Also, I'm surprised they haven't done any better ratings wise. Their signal actually seems really good to me (granted, I'm in west Knox most of the time, but their signal is strong throughout that end of town). But, I do think it's time they drop the 80s tracks and "80s, 90s, & now" slogan. They need to update as most Hot AC's have to "90s, 2K, & today". They actually play quite a bit of uptempo, almost CHR tracks, and it sounds odd next to 80s cuts. They need to stop aging out of the format's demos & concentrate on Hot AC from the 2000' & today (with a few 90s tracks).

One of the last Local and not Corperate owners who really cared about radio.

BRH is right, 106.1 The River needs to drop the 80's and use the 90's as a few drop in gold songs and concentrate on 2000 K and todays songs. That is what a true Hot AC format is. Some Hot AC's only play 2000K and todays songs minus the 80's and 90's catergory. That is what I meant by Hot AC. Some AC's that play alot of Top 40 Mainstream crossover songs are really classified as Adult Top 40, not Hot AC.
