The "STARS" Of "Love American Style" Question

On WWME-CA Channel 23 in Chicago, for the summer we are getting reruns of Love American Style.

I recognize very few of the actors. Meredith MacRae, Jesse White, Phyllis Diller to name a few on the sketches but most I haven't the vaugest idea of who they are.

My question is, were most of these people up anc coming actors and actresses on ABC during the time period and never made it or what?

Seems like the show wasn't in the vein of Love Boat or Fantasy Island in terms of stars (guest stars)<P ID="signature">______________

Many of the guest actors had been probably stars of Episodic TV in the 50's and 60's..A check of this IMdb page for Love American Style Guest stars reveals this pretty much to be the case. Seems to be a good reference

When they get to the episode,"Love And The Happy Day",you will notice that it was the pilot to Happy Days. You will see Ron Howard,Anson Williams,Marion Ross and Harold Gould(who played Howard Cunningham in the pilot). That is the only Love American Style show that I have seen.

Love American Style was indeed like The Love Boat,Fantasy Island, and Hotel in that they used guest stars from TV and movies.

Who did the theme song?

Who performed the show's theme song?

The Cowsills sang the theme song during the first season and then The Charles Fox Singers sang the theme from the 2nd season on. I have the Cowsills version on a CD of their hits which includes the theme. Unfortunately for syndication according to what I have heard, they dropped the Cowsills version entirely, and used the Charles Fox Singers theme instead. I wonder why??

Well...the theme was co-written by Paul WIlliams and Charles Fox, so that might be a reason.

Also, other singers of the theme include Jack Jones (1977-1985) and Dionne Warwick (1985-1986).

You are talking about The Love Boat in which both Jack Jones and Dionne Warwick sang the theme songs. Love American Style and The Love Boat are pretty much similar shows, only The Love Boat was set on a cruise ship and Love American Style was basically set in different places.

By the time "The Love Boat" first set sail in 1976 (in a pilot movie), "Love American Style" was already off ABC and in syndicated reruns. It was cancelled in 1974 (I think).

There was a new version of "Love American Style" in the mid-1980s that was seen late-mornings as part of ABC's daytime line-up -- I think that series only lasted a few weeks.

I remember it. Something of a comic soap opera, if you will.

Royalties to the Cowsills if they kept using that version, perhaps?

Actually Lou Rawls did the updated version for the daytime remake, "The New Love American Style," that ran on ABC from 1985 to '86.

I do remember that the pilot for Happy Days was a "Love American Style" episode. Apparently this was shot before "American Graffitti".
