The state of Portland TV

Word from GME reporter is that Kaplar quit after Sinclair screamed at the news staff for being overtaken in the ratings by WMTW. Anyone care to vouch for the accuracy of that? And who's doing the screaming?

I'm also hearing that a WCSH videographer has defected to MTW.

Could we be witnessing a genuine market shakeup?

Who is WGME trying to fool by manipulating the numbers to make themselves #1? In case you're not in the market Sinclair is declaring themselves #1 from noon to midnight in the ratings in nonstop on-air promos. Of course, the only way they can accomplish that is by throwing their early fringe, prime access and CBS Prime Time programming into the mix. Who is the would-be target of this misleading promotion?

GME's gotta say something. So it's putting the same spin on its promos that it gives potential advertisers. Personally, I don't care. It's like the terms "breaking news" and "exclusive." They're meaningless these days.

Someone on TVSpy claims a reporter's been "taken off the street." Any info?

I don't know the reason why it's happening, but since I can remember ('60's?), WABI (CBS) in Bangor has always referred to WGAN/WGME as their 'sister' station and if a story from Portland warranted coverage up here they would use WGME reports. Also many of WABI's on-air personnel would wind up down there. Off the top of my head I can think of Felicia Knight and Crystal Canney.

In the past month though, our Portland stories are coming from WMTW. Took a little getting used to.

I'm also hearing that WPXT may have changed hands in the Pegasus bankruptcy case. Does anyone know?

I'm hearing that MM Broadcasting has put in a stalking horse bid of $49.5 million for the Pegasus TV group. There will be an auction next month to see if there are any higher bidders.
