First I want to say to the folks who are listeners that there are still a lot of dedicated professionals in our business and I guess it is easy to armchair quarterback when you have no real idea of the inside workings.

A lot of stations these days are stretched as thin as possible and often times the personell are working multiple tasks and in some cases like myself, multiple stations.

I engineer the morning show on one station,Voice Track on the other,Weekends on two others.

When you are stretched this thin and you have ONE or TWO people who are not dedicated, don't go above & beyond the call of duty (like so many of us do), and don't even want to show up to work on time (if at all)...it makes a BAD situation almost intolerable.

When I have to Engineer Two FM's because the other guy can NEVER get to work on time...it throws everything off!!! Now instead of MY Station running satisfactory...I have to ENGINEER another station resulting in some dead air on each and P.D.'s who get pissed off at me when they have absolutely no idea that I'm running two stations and it throws my usual rhythm out the window!!!

These people who do not want to do the JOB...Who want to do their own work (that they should do on their own time) while their on the job and contribute nothing but cause the rest of us to be unable to concentrate and do our own jobs the best we can...really need to consider just getting out of the way or stepping up to the plate!!! I firmly believe the choice is that simple...roll up your sleeves or stay in bed forever!

Listeners...please rest assured there are those of us who do care and are working hard to make sure your favorite station stays on the air...sometimes things ain't "perfect" but there are those of us still passionate and will keep trying our best.

"Engineer"? From what you described it seems you are a board-operator.

You have a problem with a co-worker/colleague...show some guts and be an adult and deal with them directly and or run to your boss. Posting the below is ridiculous and worthless! In my opinion you come off as a wimpy bellyacher. You have been employed in broadcasting long enough to know there are those who treat it not as a career...but as a job as a fry cook at a fast food restaurant.

I've done college radio for almost 10 years and wanted to get into radio when moving to Orlando.
I sent letters stating that I would work for FREE just to get in the door to no response.

If times are tough and a guy like me, who produces a podcast for the basic adoration of the art of broadcasting and production and has experience as a reliable asset with references that will attest to this, I can come with no conclusion other than this is what the industry desires.

To reject FREE help in favor of this latecomer while spreading personnel thin, how can one infer that those that can make radio better, want to?

I'm sorry for all of the people that actually love radio.
I'm sorry you have to watch it slowly die from the inside.

Face it, radio is circling the drain. No, its not ipods, the internet or whatever technology management wants to blame it on. Radio is circling the drain because in most cases management/ownership doesn't have the guts to do the job right by programing a local radio station for a local audience. Oh yes, automation is supposed to be the answers to the world's problems, right Mr. Big Shot GM? Just listen...two or more audio sources on the air at once...an automated time check for 2 P. M. when its 7:30...dead air for minutes at a time (the board operator just happened to notice the meter wasn't bouncing when he/she glanced away from the internet)...dead air for minutes at a time (the board operator turned off the silence sensor circuit because the beeping was interfering with his/her phone conversations)...a replacement weekend talkshow (because the host didn't show up) which talks about January weather in the middle of August...news and traffic from what sounds like the local boy scout troop instead of people who know what they're talking about...infomercials for "products" which Joe Friday would consider "bunko"...pi-- poor production with copy repeating the phone number 4, 5 or 6 times.

There's one EXCEPTION to this. Just listen to WVLG at 800. They have STANDARDS which are far and above any of the "big market" Orlando stations!

WVLG is at 640 on the dial

I have been enjoyed listening to WVLG earlier today in the car and inside. (my second listening post; at my house in St. Pete, I only receive the strong Cuban signal on 640 or the IBOC hash from 620 depending on the radio).

WVLG is what many stations were about 25 - 30 years ago; live and local, music 23 hours per day. (Focus on the Villages, a local talk/information show airs Monday through Friday from just after the noon news until 1pm). Good music and plenty of local weather and news.

WVLG like an oasis in the desert.

When I'm at my parents', which is near, but not in the Villages; I listen to them a lot; when at home, I don't listen to terrestrial radio more than 2 - 4 hours per week (and at home, it's never the AM band I listen too, it's a vast wasteland); when in range of WVLG, it's not unusual for me to listen to them several hours a day.

Also, in the area of the Villages, is Leesburg and WLBE 790; also locally owned and though I don't care as much for their format, it's still nice to hear live people throughout the day; WLBE is a mixture of talk and music.

I just wish WVLG could increase their power slightly to have even better coverage; a big increase is not in the cards, as it would mean relocating the transmitter site and going directional to protect 640 in Palm Beach county.

I find it funny that some people use these forums to be a "big man" with their responses to someone posting about a job, or situation and come off sounding really bad. (such as the response posted above) And congrats to setting the poster straight about their job title. Don't you feel much better using that superior attitude to make yourself feel better? Now you get a smiley face. :)

I love this business too and you do the best you can with what you have. If someone is not doing their job then I would talk with the PD about what to do to fix the situation.

Back in the daze...as I posess an "Engineer" has a First Radio-telephone FCC license as I do, with a radar endorsement, now with a SBE endorsement..I also hold a Captain Marvel decoder Ring, so nananananan! Kiss em goodbye..BIGAPE
