Without posting any real numbers of course, here are some things I've noticed from this book 12+-wise.

97.1 JAMZ SERVES NO PURPOSE ANYMORE!!!!! V103, though not there yet, is still climbing its way to No. 1. Didn't Cox put on Jamz to prevent that from even remotely happening.

102.5: Good idea adding current stuff, considering they flopped big time playing old school R&B only.

Star lost some audience to Q100 this book. I think Star will still be on top in books to come, but the margin will surely get smaller.

Lite-FM is handing B98.5's rear-end to them. The Jack-ification of 94-9's AC format seems to work, while even heavier compression couldn't save B98 from dropping as hard as they did.

One would wish it could say the same for 99X in regards to Jack-ifying the playlist. This station fell below Q100 this time around, and I think it had something to do with Buzz, Dave, and good ole' competition plain and simple.

That's all I've noticed. Discuss, y'all!

I'm very impressed with what Lite is doing. It sounds great! I've noticed others are enjoying the changes at Lite too. I think B-98.5 should play a lot more currents to seperate its self from Lite. No one is focusing on currents in AC in this market. That could match up B-98.5 against Star 94 also? I don't like the IPOD weekends at 99X. It's a good idea, but I'm not a big fan of it as a listener. I'm sure Dave's numbers will drop next book if their signal problems don't improve.
______________

I guess this interesting AC battle between Lite and B98.5 will continue. It is interesting that you brought Star into the discussion table. I doubt B would have any effect on Star, but you never know. Obviously B is focusing on Lite FM.

Now, the Christmas wars will start soon. Do both stations go all Christmas? Does any other stations go Christmas?

Acording to the numbers Rodney provided, WSB-FM/B98.5 is ahead of WLTM/Lite in its key demo (25-54). And Kelly and Alpha are still ahead of Randy and Spiff, even though R&S is now on a more powerful and more listened to station.

Saying that, B98.5 is headed down the toilet quickly. It is the Cox philosophy that is causing this.

If you look at B's playlist and the playlist of other Cox ACs in other markets, you will notice parallel programming between them all. Half of each stations playlists are identical to one another,a nd there is a pattern of songs they will play and they will not play. Take a look and you will see. This is because of the Cox philosophy of doing things. Their Top 40s in Jacksonville and Long Island have terrible playlists, just 40 or so songs, and it is not even a true top 40, many popular songs are missing. Cox is killing its own stations.

B98.5 needs to go to a upbeat hot ACish type format a la sister stations KRAV Tulsa and WFLC Miami. They would need to ditch 70's music (and all of their slower tunes) in favor of an upbeat 80's, 90's and today format. (Similar to the B98.5 of 2002, when the 70's music was shifted to Fox 97 in attempt to save Fox. B98.5 was playing very upbeat pop tunes from Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys at the time, while keeping their core AC artists). But lets take it a step further.

WFOX/97.1 Jamz was dead on arrival. Urban formats need personalities to flourish. I honestly think Cox will pull the plug on the station by the end of the year. I think that a classic hits format would work here. It would fill a void left by Cool 105.7 (and of course, the original Fox 97), because these formats play basically 60s-80's AC music. (Which BTW, would sound like the WFOX of the late 80's.)

This would be similar to what Cox is doing in Tampa with WDUV and WWRM. A couple of years ago. Cox reformatted WWRM "Warm 94.9" in Tampa to a contemporary leaning AC "Magic 94.9", and easy listening WDUV to classic hits (altough they officially give the station an AC designantion). WDUV is constiently #1 in the market (that part of Florida is a lot of retirees), while WWRM caused Clear Channel hot AC WMTX to (I believe) flip from an AC because of this.

While this probably would not happen exactly like that in Atlanta. (B98.5 would beat WFOX in most likelyhood under this scenerio), it is worth a try. Together, they could cause Lite to flip formats.

In the interim, Lite will go all-Christmas, along with WFSH 104.7. B98.5 will probably go all-Christmas as well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also wanted to note that WWVA-FM/Viva, which displaced Cool 105.7 is now tied for #5. I guess having the station where it can serve the intended audience made a big difference.

^^^^^^ I sure the heck hope so. This station is an abomination. It does not belong in a top 10 market. It is really sad what it use to be, to what it has come to now. I am sure the transmitter is crying. Do they really think anyone listens to them??? It was such an awesome station in the day.

Either that or maybe they could go AOR. That way they can stay away from any of its sister stations musically if they play the best rock of the 80's, 90's, and now.

They could also try Rhythmic AC with more upbeat R&B oldies, tweak B98.5 softer to compete directly with 94.9, shift Kiss 104 smoother, and have 95.5 keep leaning towards the harder hip-hop.

Just a couple of suggestions.

Lite is great because they play Casey Kasem Sundays from 3-6. It's about time someone in this market picked him up!

What's especially impressive about LITE is they went up during the Summer book. Summer is the worst book for AC, if you look across the country the great majority of ACs were down (and some really tanked), WLTM is the rare exception. Being a sort of AC JACK was a great move because it helps them pick up some displaced oldies listeners.

Alive 97

How about "The Christmas Thief." Wait until another popular station flips to all Christmas and take their place with an ad campaign telling listeners where to go to find their favorite music. I'm surprised no one has tried this with all the popular stations around the country going Christmas in early November. That is a month, sometimes two, depending on how fast they get in the Christmas spirit, in a market without a popular money making format. That is the time to go after their listeners and do it in style, with a big playlist you'll shorten after you're established in the market in late January or early Feb.

I would actually like to see a station try a rock and hip-hop Christian format in this market. This is Atlanta after all! It could be Alive 97 and could flip around the same time The Fish goes all Christmas. Listeners will be in search of another Christian station and the younger end of both The Fish and Praise will try it. I could almost hear the P.O.D. stunting now. :) The great thing about Christian formats...some advertisers don't care about the ratings. I would invest in some personalities for this one and add a few spins of local artists or have a locals show on Sunday. It would help establish Atlanta's younger Christian music scene and be one of those stations artists across the country want to be heard on. The young audience has to be attractive. Look at how many young Christians are into rock and hip hop music. I know I would preset this one! This one could make money for them if done right. It would fill a hole, instead of compete and the audience would be young. If they don't like what they see, they can always tweak in the direction they think the ratings are. Hip Hop or Alternative. I would start out with a 60/40 or 70/30 alternative/hip hop mix and adjust from there. Many of these artists are crossing-over and are very familiar to both Christians and non-Christians. I don't think it would force any of the other Christian stations to change formats. Like I said, it would fill a hole for the younger listeners.
______________
