The Surf Wipes Out Bob On 104.9 FM!

Apparently, 104.9 Bob-FM in Myrtle Beach is off the air - not the first time it's happened, as when this occurs, I will usually hear a rash of static on their stream.

This morning, with a lower level of static, I am hearing other radio stations bleed in over the stream, such as WLHH/104.9 The Surf in Hilton Head. Incidentally, the morning guy on that stations mentioned how their own station was off the air for several hours yesterday due to storms; I'm guessing that might be the reason why WYNA is off the air at this time, but as I mentioned, Bob is sporadically off the air for whatever reason.

Also interesting to see on the WLHH Wikipedia page that as recent as this winter, the 104.9 format in Hilton Head was similar to 104.9 in Myrtle Beach - they were known as "John FM" before flipping to Oldies as "The Surf."

Bob - good station, but what a ghetto streaming setup!

WLHH was indeed "104-9 John FM". It wasn't a traditional "Jack/Joe/Bob/Ben FM" station, but was "beach, boogie, blues, and a little bit of jazz". It just sorta floundered with that format and was sold (for a complete steal) for $650k to the current owners, and they have been fairly successful ever since. Smartest move made down here in years and years!

Yeah...most of the stations on the HHI side of Savannah/Hilton Head were off air for a spell due to power outages. There was a fierce wind/rain/thunderstorm that hit the area very hard. Got lots of rain and had to park my sedan further down the street to prevent flooding from the nearby pond.

There's one other station that I know of that does "Beach, Boogie & Blues" - WNCT-AM 1070 in Greenville, NC.

Apparently, this "Carolina Beach Music" thing is big down there...

You'd think...I know at one point stations in Wilmington, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Columbia, and Hilton Head (two different stations) had beach music! Shoot, going back home to VA about a year ago WFLO-FM in Farmville had beach music on Saturdays!

It's a highly, highly, niche format, much like "swamp pop" in the bayou is. You might get the ratings, but only local yokel businesses that listen to your station will buy commercials. That was the problem with John FM. Took about a year to get any ratings above a 2 share in Hilton Head, and when your income is limited during that year...well, it makes for a tough row to hoe regardless.

I can see it as a decent format for failing AM stations so long as you have time to let it grow...but for FM you may be better off putting classic country or AAA on there! Of course like any format there are exceptions to this rule...I think Myrtle Beach still has a "shag" station on FM.

Yeah, Charleston has an AM beach music station at 1340. Now, it is the only oldies station in town. It does play some oldies, but it is mostly beach and boogie music.

95.9 FM, the former oldies station, had several beach music shows, including "On the Beach" with Charlie Brown.

Even WBRF has a beach music show, the one that Goodtimesandgreatoldies always talks about, saying that they will switch to oldies.

It's also to varying degrees but all have a LOT of beach music, on WPCM Burlington, WODR-FM Whiteville, WLWL Rockingham, all in NC.

You're thinking of 94.9 the Surf.

I was in the Gay Dolphin last week. A man who looked like Mr. Plyler (and probably was) said, "Welcome" to me. That was nice. I never buy anything but I always enjoy looking. But I can't stand Bob, which is what is playing in there. Too much of that music is too loud. They used to have Sunny 106.5. I have fond memories of when they had instrumental Muzak in there.
