As a result, other than the nightlight programming on Channels 2, 4 and 5, the analog era has ended. WHDH Channel 7 made the switch to digital at 00:00:10. WHDH-DT left the air (on Channel 42) at the same time. A few seconds later WHDH returned to Channel 7 in the digital mode. As a result, the digital transition is completed. By the way, Channel 56 is also gone.

I don't know if I'd say a job well done... NONE of the Boston station did any kind of historic retrospective, live report from the transmitter site, or ANYTHING like I'm seeing from dozens of stations around the country. They couldn't even manage to have a crawl running across the top or bottom of the screen, which even WLWC-28 managed to do back in December! Every station in Boston should be ashamed of itself.
 
Think of all those old transmitters that the engineers took such pride in and worked so hard to keep on the air. They definatley got their money's worth out of them and then some. While I haven't watched analog OTA TV since 2000, I certantly have a respect for it and am a touch saddened to see the end of an era, but am happy to see us transition to the next phase of broadcasting...

Same here. I was up at 2:15 AM on 3/19/1972 watching WHDH-5 run a blank screen until 2:29:45 when they returned to the test pattern for a legal ID (voiced by Ken Stahl) and the transmitter was pulled at exactly 2:30 AM. WCVB-5 fired up with a color test pattern at 2:42 AM, And the rest was history. The first voice on WCVB-5 was..... Ken Stahl! I wonder if they can get get Ken Stahl to do a legal ID just before they pull the analog for the last time on July 12th?

Too bad there won't be anything replacing it on analog channel 5.

Also -- is Ken Stahl still alive (and in the business)?

As far as I know, Ken is still alive. He was doing talk on KDWN/Las Vegas up until a few years ago.
And yes, it's too bad nothing will be on Channel 5 once they end nightlight on July 12th. DTV will never be a
perfect substitute for analog. Just look at Channel 7's signal now. The same for WPVI-6 in Philly, no coverage.
 
I'm having trouble with one of my VCR's connected to a converter. I can't get it to record after a timer-set. I had scanned the VCR which I assumed would pick up the content of the new box.

Do some of these older VCR's just not work anymore after the change a few days ago?

Do you have the VCR connected to the converter box via RF coax? If so, the VCR should pick up the converter's signal on either channel 3 or 4. In other words, you would tune the converter to whatever channel you want to record, and then set the VCR to record either channel 3 or 4 depending on your setup. If you are using RCA cables to connect the converter to the VCR then you would probably have to record Line In (or something similar). Most importantly, make sure your converter box power is left on, otherwise there will be no signal to the VCR.

Thanks, that's interesting: I'm using coax.
You would tune the converter to ch:56 (desired station), set the VCR timer to Ch:3 at 9.30pm? ,shut off the VCR and TV, but leave the converter tuned to ch:56 in the on postion.

Well I didn't do either of those things so I have to try that out. I checked an old manual but obviously they had nothing about up-to-date converters.
 
First really bad rain yesterday made for poor reception, and I'm not even talking about Ch.7. Much to often there were fades in 2,4,5...

What bit? Besides... I didn't think his parents live in Rhode Island. I know Conan did, but I wasn't aware his parents did. Conan did a bit last night with a guy who he said was his dad. But I don't know if it was really his father or just an actor. However the town under the man said Milford, Connecticut. So now I'm confused.

Yeah, it was also bad yesterday, look at this recording of WHDH 7News at 11. I used to be able to get it with decent quality via analog, but I tried with digital, and this happened...
