The System-XM82 is coming to an end. (November 4th)

According to a post made by Victor Dinaire over on the XMFan.com message boards, The System-XM82 will be coming to an end on November 4th. I listen to the channel frequently, along with BPM. The System will be missed along with Zoltar and Alan Freed.

I'm assuming it has to do with the merger of XM and Sirius, but could also be because of Worldspace filing for bankruptcy. It sucks they are doing away with the channel. It was a lot better than Sirius' Area 38.

Area 38 from Sirius will prolly take its place on XM Radio since the two satellite companies have merged. Expect to hear Armin Van Buuren and Above & Beyond's shows on the new sound of Area 38.

I'm hearing that Area 38 does survive as does only one of the other dance stations.

I'm also hearing that we are losing another Dance FM from the airwaves and chart very soon.

Not a good week for dance radio so far. :(

If it's the station I think you're talking about they may Energize the web fulltime.

Yes, it's Energy in Phoenix.

Also hearing that today is Sirius' turn to let a large number of people go.

Any word on BPM's fate or The Beat....

I really hope they don't make the wrong move and axe BPM... Its miles ahead of The Beat. There is over 75 percent more new music on BPM than The Beat. Which means more exposure for new dance music. I can't stand The Beat. Its got to be the worst programmed dance channel I've ever heard.

I'm pretty sure BPM is safe, and totally agree that it sounds light years ahead of The Beat.

Maybe John can shed some hints to what the direction is for Dance hits? Please!

And is Boombox, Sirius' breakbeat channel gonna make it?

Not sure how well Boombox is doing, but they should probably turn it into more of a House music channel in the same vein as Radio FG. House is considerably more popular then Breaks, and should be able to post the kind of ratings as a Progressive House and Trance channel if not better. House, Electro, and select Breaks would be a killer format!
If Boombox goes away then perhaps DJ Icey's show will be moved to Area 38.

I dithced XM after they ditched The Move,,, The Move was similar to Radio FG and the London Pirates like Passion 91.8,,,I liked the System better than Area 38, they had a bigger deeper playlist and had a more progresssive sound to it,,,, Now we can even hear A state of Trance in the U.S now except over the web, it was bad enough when they Dropped John Digweed-Transitions from The Move, but this takes the cake.. I guess we still got the dance on BBC 1,,, but if I had to choose, i would pick a Kiss 100 simulcast over BBC,,,, BBC would be really awesome if there wasnt so much interactive talk and news, it reminds me of Radio 538 in Holland, or Radio DEEJAY in Rome Itally.

Whats cool about BBC Radio 1 is the variety of music. Some of their shows are also excellent as far as exposure to good Rock or Hip Hop music that even most American stations arent playing.
You're right though - it is annoying at times that there's too much talk on BBC Radio 1, radio 538, or Radio Deejay. And yet, these stations are hugely successful in their home countries.
Radio 538, for example, is almost always number one in Holland:

Since you brought up London's Kiss 100, you'd be happy to know the station is up to its highest ratings ever (if I'm not mistaken):

Is there a way to listen to Kiss 100 online in the US? I just tried their site totalkiss.com and it blocked the streaming because I have a US ISP.

I am able to get Capital 95.8 and Radio 1.

What I've heard is that BPM is going to make the new line-up as is Area. I've heard, again not officially, that the other dance channels are pretty much gone. Will that really happen? I guess we will have to wait and see.

I have a big sigh of relief if BPM does make it. It is clearly superior to The Beat.

The other dance channels gone? That include Disco stations like Strobe and Chrome and what about the Chill stations?

As for Area vs. System... There must be staffing changes so it could very well be changes on the Area programming side which could improve the format/repetition? Just because System is gone doesn't mean they can't improve on Area and take whats best from System over on it... I read Worldspace is going bankrupt too.. So The System might of not lived for long anyways...

It would make sense to keep BPM and Area 38 around. As the other offerings, I hate to see the others go, but I hope they keep The Move and Chrome.

Not to get on a different tangent, but I knew this was going to start happening once the merger happened. Working currently for a company Mel K used to run, I know what he's all about: making as much profit as possible! If the format is not a revenue generator, it's cut (unless it's Stern...) He's a cheap bastard, which is why I never understood why the NAB fought the merger so much...

Best line from Mel was when 80-some odd people were shown the door at XM-Sirius; "Oh no, these are not MERGER cuts, it's just some house keeping!"

It doesn't matter really, once more free streaming apps are available for portable players (like the iPod Touch) Satellite is trivial, and radio won't be far behind... Ooops, gotta go say goodbye to some more good friends who jobs are being "eliminated."

sometimes, this business sux....

I think that everyone knew it was going to happen. It's part of the wonderful world of mergers. Eliminate the duplication. Save some money. Show a company that has "turned things around" and then dump it on the next sucker for a profit.

I think a couple of the things that they didn't count on was the love that many XM subs have for the deeper playlists of their now eliminated stations. If you read some of the boards these people are not happy and are saying they will be dumping/not renewing their sub. I'm sure they figured some of that into the numbers but this appears to be a group bigger than anticipated.

And the downward spiraling economy. Hard to sell big ticket/frivolous things in these times. I guess we'll all just have to see how it plays out for them.
