The "This Bay Area" channel

I was rescanning my TV and the tuner picked up this interesting channel on Channel 42.3 called "This Bay Area"

It has been showing black and white dramas and some old time dramas. Looks interesting! Does anyone know who owns this channel?

I am very curious!

Weigel Communications and MGM are the owners of THIS-TV. Their film library consists of the broadcast rights leftovers from United Artists and MGM that Ted Turner didn't gobble up in 1986. They do have quite an extensive library but most of it falls squarely in the drive-in B-reel category with most emphasis on the 70's to mid 80's. There are a few gems that pop up from time to time. Mostly though it airs a lot of cult, blacksploitation, slashers and films featuring stars before they were stars. Many of these films I'm sure no longer appear on the actor's resume.

It is a fun channel at times, especially for hardcore movie buffs and it's best asset is it nationally shows zero infomercials, unless your local affiliate inserts them which they have full reign to do if they desire. THIS-TV is one of the best examples of DTV multicasting to serve as an entertainment purpose and not another RADAR sweep map or barker channel.

You hit the nail on the head about this channel. I also like Retro TV. They air a lot of old TV shows from the 70s and 80s. Our local affilate puts in some even older stuff from the 50s and 60s when he has to block RTV when other local stations have the rights to the shows they are carrying.

My hope is that some of the other media companies will see there's a need for quality programming on DTV subchannels and will create more stations like This and RTV.

My other favorite example of DTV multicasting is The CW Plus, Its generally used for The CW affilate in A small market, with Sitcoms,Talk Shows and CW programing in Prime Time. In some markets I've seen It as a subchannel on a markets CBS Affilate. Its on semi-locally on Monnterry's KION 46.2 (google CW Central Coast for there website) and KHSL 12.2 (In the Redding/Chico market (CBS 12 produces a 10 o'clock newscast for it) To see their website google The CW 10 Chico Redding (Its on most local cable systems on channel 10)

In Boise, Idaho, KNIN is the regular CW affiliate, which also carries a CW Plus channel as a subchannel.

...plus the American International/Vestron catalog, which MGM/UA acquired some time after Turner sold the studio back to Krikorian...
