The Threat of Flood

WILK did a decent job keeping people informed last night and this morning of
the impending flooding in the Wyoming Valley area. Apparently they brought in Rob Nyehard to do some night time duty.
While the coverage was a far cry from the "network" newsman David DeCosmo set up in 1972, it did provide needed updates about road closings and travel plans. Any thoughts on this?

Yonk... I got a taste today of what my predecessors were forced into in '72... getting called to the station at 4:30am because nobody else could get to the station in Pottsville. I went into info mode from 6-11am... we only had two people in the building until 8am. We treated this like a major snowstorm, doing our best to keep everyone updated, since all the TV's are at least an hour away.

Looks like we'll have more of the same for the rest of the week.

TV-wise, I'm pleased with what the stations are offering.

Where the puck was WPUU? They should have been broadcasting the latest info on a tape or computer loop so people would not have to be glued to a tv set if that was not possible or feasible. Instead, all I heard when I tuned in was Farmer's Market information, trash pick-up schedules and the usual NOAA Weather Radio forecast.

WPUU, you know: The Wilkes-Barre City Emergency Radio Station in the expanded band at, I think, 1620.

Emergency Radio Station.

We had an emergency.

PUU on yuu.

The Flood of 2006

Shame nobody streamed over the internet. Woul dhave loved to hear how it was being covered there.

All I had to go to was KYW 1060 and the newscasts on 69. With their coverage in Reading and LV, one would have thought they would be on it like white on rice.

Tom, I think that radio station was a casualty of the McGroarty administration. My feeling is they want to get as far away from that guy (justly or unjustly, I thought he was an effective if eccentric Mayor purposely sabotaged by a do nothing veteran city council backed by a do nothing Chamber of Commerce as far as new, high paying jobs goes) as possible. Either they forgot it existed or no one brought it up because it was implemented during a previous administration.
In the meantime, I think WILK did a masterful job staying on the air and providing wall to wall coverage,

If I had the time and energy, I'd love to program WPUU from my own studio. Do something useful with the freq. Not that what's on now isn't useful, but I think I have a track record for making what sounds like a dull format rather popular.

"Welcome to the Radio Home Puu. Here is the trash pickup schedule, read by Mr. Enthusiasm himself, Dave Yonki. Dave..."

"Oooookay, Tom. Here's the trash news, but it's not trashy news, ha ha. So, here's when to put out another man's treasure. You live in the North End, well, aside from not getting flooded, you can deck the streets with last night's party on Mondays..."

"Next, the Farmer's Market schedule with my vacation relief announcer, Sue Henry."

"Here we are, folks. They're having specials on gherkins in case you want to go fherkin or privately jherkin. Tomaytoes, tomahtoes; potaytoes, potahtoes; they won't call the whole thing off -- call the veggies what you want and someone will be selling them. And don't forget those watermelons; the Plains Senior Citizens brought 36 of them to the NAACP's Diversity Picnic -- really! Da Farmer's Market in da Valley. Buh-Bye now!"

Hey, I'll go to City Council with you to see if they'll let us do it. It's a shame that frequency is going to waste. The first thing we'll have to do is wake them up, but after that, I think we'd have a shot!!!!

P.S. Monday night is garbage night in the North End.
