"The Ticket" coming to Houston

David Yates jumps to Cumulus

The other interesting thing is that David Yates has left WBAP & KTRH to bring his Home Improvement radio show to Cumulus. Yates will air from 2p-5p Saturdays on KLIF and 97.5. I imagine he'll stay on 97.5 after the switch to sports. Apparently the deal was done last week because KTRH removed all Home Improvement Hotline references and had TBA from 7a-10a on their weekend schedule last week.

Does anyone think KTRH will again find a new Home Improvement Hotline host? It will be the second time in three years they are replacing Tom Tynan.

I find it interesting that both home improvement shows have moved to sports formatted stations. Perhaps the target audience here is men and this is why they are there - but 740 has a better signal than both 610 and 97.5. Frankly, I preferred Tom Tynan to whats his name that has the home improvement hotline now on KTRH. You would think that with KTRH's move to talk that home improvement would be welcome, but maybe the local shows are all moving to KPRC. There used to be a gardening show on KTRH years ago and it moved to KPRC - is it going away also?

There also used to be a golf show on Sunday mornings on KTRH several years ago - it is long gone as well. These niche shows are disappearing.

Stan,
Sorry you don't like my show as well. My move in Houston to 97.5 had nothing to do with the format flip to sports on 97.5. After 10 years in Dallas radio, the last 5 on WBAP and 3 years on KTRH, I am finally able to syndicate my show via ABC's StarGuide and reach a much larger audience. Up until last month I was hosting 10 hours of live home improvement shows in Houston and Dallas, and it was wearing me out! In addition, Clear Channel and ABC Radio owned the copyright to the shows per my contracts, so I couldn't podcast them, etc.

I enjoyed the people at KTRH and WBAP very much, and both stations were good to work for. The new opportunity (Saturdays 2-5 pm) allows time on Sunday morning for church with the family again, and time to catch the kids' weekend activities.

A big difference in my show and all of the other home improvement shows is that I actually work for the stations, whereas the other show you mentioned (along with about 10 others here in Houston) are paid infomercials.

I hope you'll give the new show a listen here in Houston, or in Dallas on TalkRadio 570 KLIF, or in Lake Charles on SuperTalk 1400, or in Greenville on AM1440, or soon in Waco, Temple, Tyler, Lubbock, Austin or San Antonio.

David

David,

I like the job you do with your show - I guess my lingering problem with KTRH was the way in which they disposed of Tom Tynan from their station. I thought he was treated less than fairly, so I was reluctant to listen to your show, at least initially. If I'm not mistaken both you and Tynan are carried on stations in both Dallas and Houston; is that correct?
