The Ticket, ESPN and The Fan

Why would they travel all the way to Florida just to take calls from "Rusty in Garland"..?

Hell, they're barely talking sports, so I doubt that they even bothered to send a show, much less ALL their shows to Miami.

The last couple of days, whenever I tuned in to The Fan, they've been doing anything BUT sports. Yesterday's PM drive was them talking about an outing to a strip club, immediately followed by an in-depth discussion of "Lost"...

I really think they're realizing that they've gotten their ass kicked, and their giving up the sports landscape to KTCK and KESN...

I know we've disagreed in other threads, but this is the best post I've read around here in weeks.

Maybe the rumors about 105.3 reverting to its hot talk format is really true...

Sounds like they are misapplying the formula that has made the Ticket succesful.

The Ticket has been succesful because they have known when it is time to do guy talk and when it is time to talk sports.

They are trying to imitate this, but they have no idea when or how to do it so it makes sense and is in line with the listeners. The Ticket has beeen very good at that most of their existence.

Outside of norm, the other shows have known when to go sports heavy and when to back off.

What's that old saying? Something like, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery? ESPN won't go anywhere near what the Ticket has established, but the Fan seemed to mold it's lineup with rejects from the ticket and mimic their style.

I know a good young talented show that is "on the beach" right now, they sent stuff into the Fan looking for part-time weekends, but were rejected because they talked sports all the time and rarely took phone calls...? Isn't that what you want from a sports station?

The talent at the Ticket is amazing. Think about it, they have all been in the same time slot for at least 10 years. Many have tried, but they can't do, what they can do.

I agree with you ET, but give credit to CBS for trying.

Hey, if something works, why not try and get a piece of that pie? Too bad for CBS, they put Bigby in charge of it...It was doomed from the start.

They can do what the others do. But, the others can't do what they do.

That's the difference between real and pure entertainment and programmed, formulated spread-sheet calculated "entertainment." It's personality and content against marketing and positioning. The Fan could spend a BILLION dollars fronting their station in this market and they'd get little or nothing for it. It means nothing once the content is exposed and knowingly hollow.

Just, curiosity and all, what "Fan" hosts and staff are in Miami this week and piping back the minutia and "behind the scenes" factoids for us listeners in DFW?

Yeah, that's what I thought....

Agreed.
And I heard one of their promos when I was out picking up dinner. "The other station talks to each other, we talk to YOU".

Problem being, I don't necessarily want to hear phone calls, I want to be entertained. And if Rusty in Garland is entertaining, that's great, but all too often he's not.

S0, sorry bigby, I'd rather hear the Musers or Hardline talk to each other than Barsky and Greg take another call from some idiot who can barely string together an intelligible sentence.

That promo is a microcosm (sp?) of what is wrong with the fan. They think it's about phone calls. It's not. It's about giving listeners something they can't get elsewhere.

Hello All,
I like the Fan!!! but y'all are right....why is evening drive (Mon.-Fri.) talking about life and s----it and not sports. I love to see Pete Stein and M Rod back at the FAN on 6PM-10PM Mon-Fri. Stein and M Rod talked all about sports all 4 hours of there show. Pete is a great sportsman. I have known Pete Stein since the early 1990's. I like to know the bone head at CBS let PeteStein go...he is great on air talent. I hate the Ticket. I hate the bsss on sports they talk about. I do not like a station that running 5 channels or ways to pick up it's broadcast. You only need 1 big powerfull signal move to a am dial channel....you can go to 50,000 watts day and 25,0000 at night. ESPN, I listen to only for Mavs games...all the sports talk sucks like the little ticket.

Dan=the=MAN!!
The North Texas Radio Man!!

I stopped listening to the FAN a while back, but all of the callers totally derail the show(s) on this horrible station. The host will start off on a sport topic, and take calls. Then a "lifestyle" topic, and takes calls on that. Than another sports topic, take calls. Now a current event topic, take calls. Than another sports topic, take calls. What follows is calls start coming in not about the topic the host(s) is currently talking about, but about something discussed two segments ago, or last segment. Then another call comes in an this guy wants to comment on the current topic and the topic fom three segments ago. This is how every show works on the FAN. Every show is all over the place, unfocused and just hard to follow. Add that to the fact that most callers are horrible!! It just makes for an unlistenable experience.

sure that wasn't the Ticket????

Defineitely the Fan. Heard the promo, you can join Jagger and Barsky and greg inside the VIP area at whatever strip club it is they'll be at.
(And is that a new low? I remember Big Dick both at the Ticket and later did strip club appearences, but your AM drive anchor lowering himself to doing strip club appearences? how desperate is that? how desperate is the Fan for billing and attention?

And the Ticket gets a bad rap IMHO. They cover sports when there's sports to be covered, but they also realize that water cooler talk is about the grammies, the Oscars, TV shows, etc...

People may not like the sports/non sports mix they are throwing out there, but it's been damn succesful. They were the top billing station in the market a couple of years back, and IIRC, they're still in the top handful of stations, so SOMEONE (like thousands of listeners) likes what they're doing...

I know they're really successful...but having Corby walk across a live TV shot or Gordon asking dumb questions isn't quite compelling radio. i often wonder how pissed they wold be if others did the same stunts to them. Especially whiny Corby.
