The Ticket makes the list...and the bucks.

KTCK made an impressive showing among sports/talk stations nationally, according to BIA Financial Network. A story from Sunday's Houston Chronicle reveals that The Ticket was among the top five stations in 2006 based on billing. WFAN New York topped the list.

Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to admit The Ticket's formula works. Here in Houston, the SportsTalkers have gotta be embarrassed by the comparison (check my thread on this subject on the Houston board.)

One big difference between DFW and Houston: The H-town shows are driven by phone calls, which often drag things down, as the discussion is lame much of the time. I hear little of that in DFW, where the hosts' banter/opinions/inteviews are the key.

Norm's midday shift is largely dedicated to the serious sports talk listener. The other shifts mix guy talk, bits, and sports.

I think the rap on too much guy talk is a little phony --- all the stations mix that in. Having flipped by KFCD 990 at times, half the time they are not talking sports. Similarly, KESN 103.3 is often off-topic as well in local shows (Hansen's 20 minute rants to start his show on "Boston Legal", airport security, etc.) or national shows ("24" talk on Dan Patrick, etc.).

I think the mix of non-sports talk is done to keep it from being repetitive. If they didn't do it, it would be nothing but how awful the Rangers are every segment since they're the only major sports team active now.

I am hoping that someday the Ticket or any of the other sports talkers will discover that there is a first place Major League Soccer team in town.

I'm one of the few men on this earth that doesn't have much interest in sports. That being said, I really enjoy the guys on the Ticket who do their chat program around drive home time. I think they are clever, and I like the idea of the chat being over jazz. In fact I was listening to them today.

I see you guys banging the Ticket around from time to time, but I've got to tell you, I am not the least bit surprised their formula is working and the old Guy Savage-style copy cats aren't. And that junk in Houston is exactly that. Junk.

The Ticket is proving the "Guy" talk can work. Like their promos, they can talk sports just like anyone else but they can also talk about anything else like women, movies, news of the day, even some old Dallas history that I find pretty cool......The fact that they bill what they do is a testament of programming working with the business side and making a killing. Randy Galloway tries to use some of the lingo they use on the Ticket and its like a 60 year old woman wearing clothing that a teen should only be wearing.....Looks terrible...Granted I do like the Cuevo drinkin' Galloway but the usage of lingo to imitate the Ticket guys drives me nuts. The Ticket is a model sports radio station. I you think you need to rely on calls like some stations do then your like the guy in the band that says if I had that guitar and that amp and that processor I would sound great. Can you play the damn guitar is my question, to go back to sports and guy talk can you carry a conversation that is compelling? The Ticket can....I am glad I can get them on the Internet being that I am on the West coast now.

Hey, Radio Man. That was great! You talk the talk and walk the walk. Get yourself off of the west coast and come back here and give these guys a lesson in radio station programming. I mean it.

Yeah, there's nothing funnier than f-a-r-t jokes.
But it's not like that's all they do.

Oh yeah, sure you'll hear the occasional extended childish run where they talk farts, or boobs, or whatever. But they'll almost always go right into sports after that...

I listen to Russ, and I swear, somedays it seems like I can listen for an hour or 2 straight and there's no 'subject' that they're talking about...except Russ, of course...

With the Ticket, IMHO, they do a decent mix- yeah they'll do a fake character, but they'll follow it up with Rangers talk. They'll talk about this weeks big concert, and follow it up with basketball talk...

The way I figure it, they're one of the top billers sports wise nationwide, they're a top biller in this market, and they're consistently near the top w/persons 25-54...In other words they're successful...And isn't it kind of hard to argue with success?

Yep. The only thing I'd be concerned about is how much longer the Rangers talk will last? I mean sheesh, you (or at least "I") can only tolerate so many repetitions of "The rangers stink... such... not doing well etc etc" for so long.

Rumour has it as of 7am this morning that Tom Hicks is fed up and will fire the Rangers Manager and pay off his contract and Robert Bass will replace him. I smell pennant!

Training camp starts, what, mid july? If they can get through 6 weeks, the cowboys kick in, and according to what I've heard, they live and breathe Cowboys over there...

By the way the Ticket does approximately a 2.0-2.2 power ratio. An awesome job indeed. Entertaining and great for the bottom line....Hopefully the folks at Clueless don't screw it up......
