Growing up in the 70's and early 80's WIBC was on in our house every day at the breakfast table and of course during bad storms. Outside of the actual songs about WIBC (there were several) these are my favorite songs that seemed to be on the eternal playlist at WIBC........

10. Playground in my Mind - Clint Holmes

9. You're in My Heart - Rod Stewart (big during Blizzard coverage)

8. Boogie Fever - The Sylvers

7. Wildfire - Michael Martin Murphy

6. Beth - KISS

5. You Make Me feel like Dancing - Leo Sayer

4. Mac Arther Park - Richard Harris (someone left a cake out in the rain!)

3. Brandy - Looking Glass

2. Delta Dawn - Helen Reddy

1. The Things We Do for Love - 10cc

Now this list could change at anytime depending on what I remember....actually anything from Paul McCartney & Wings would trump most on the list but hey....since we keep going down memory lane...I thought I would start a new path. (Actually My Love by Paul McCartney still reminds me of listening during tornado coverage

Little Green Apples by OC Smith

And its been all down hill since then. Almost on a daily basis, WIBC's programming just keeps getting worse. They continue to become less and less relevent and more out-of-touch with their primary audience.

Popcorn by Hot Butter, Theme from Greatest American Hero, and the theme from Welcome Back Kotter.
Ann Tenna, do you they would be better off if they still had David Appleford spinning those hits in the mid-day?

Delfonics - (Didn't I) Blow Your Mind.

Stylistics - Betcha By Golly Wow. ;D

And of course.. the original "Theme from Shaft".... WIBC used to play the heck out of that song... and I recall the Pacers playing in the Fairgrounds Coliseum warming up to that song. Guess it was a sort of 70's Jock Jam!! :D

I was just talking to Bob Simpson about this thread. He was agreed about the TV show theams like The Rockford Files and how heavy the information was: 6 songs an hour, 6min. news top and bottom, plus 4 traffic reports. Used to listen to Bob in my 1972 Toyota Carona. It came nicely equipt w/ an AM radio.

Where is David these days?

WIBC played Boogie Fever?? In 1992 they actually played "Baby Got Back" by Sir
Mix-a-Lot. Will they one day become YO 10-70?

THEY DID???

That is so funny!!!

In Cincinnati, "Baby Got Back" couldn't even played on the alleged CHR, but in Indianapolis it could be played on a stodgy old full-service AC???

I was a captive listner to WIBC in the mornings (not actually that bad, though WNAP would have been my choice) from the summer of 1973 when WFBM flipped to WNDE 1260 and 1978 when I left for college. For a brief time, WXLW was the featured station when Joe Pickett & Glenn Webber were there (wish my aircheck of Joe Pickett "wrestling" Dick The Bruiser had not been stolen).

Up through at least 1974, WIBC was pretty limited as seemed to me to more of an AC/MOR hybird.

I distinctly remember as a teenager calling the evening DJ at the time in March, 1974 (I cannot remember his name). I requested two songs - "Your Song" by Elton John and "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues. He told me that the Elton John song was not available with the station's 45's, but he had a copy at home and he could bring it in (which he did a few days later). However, the only "Nights in White Satin" version he could play was a cover by an "MORish soundning" group - kind of like the ones that would sing covers of hit rock songs on the Beautiful Music stations! His comment to me was the original Moody Blues version was not allowed at the station by the MD since it was from a "rock group".

It was not until a year or two later than the station began playing a full "hit" AC spectrum.

That is not surprising. My dad worked mornings at WGY, Schnectady, during that same time frame ('73-'78). They were a top rated station like WIBC and only played the softer AC stuff, plus standard artists like Jack Jones, Perry Como, etc. until about '76 when they shifted to straight-up AC music on a Full Service format.

What I remember about WIBC music is that in their later years, they had a pretty decent AC music selection. Their music during the 80's featured a lot of gold, but still managed at least 8-10 top current hits. During the late 80's, early 90's before Sconnix took them all N/T, they still played music on the weekends. Paul Mendendall hosted a Saturday morning show that played a lot of music. When the station dropped music in 1992, that same Saturday morning show with Paul became "Saturday Morning Open Phones", (this was before he left for WTTS). I remember the music selection included a lot of solid "no brainer" best-of-the-best AC hits like "Here We Are" (Gloria Estefan) or "Nick of Time" (Bonnie Raitt) and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (Police). I heard Jeff Pigeon intro "Sacrifice" by Elton John, saying it was one of his favorite songs.

Of course, WIBC from the Fairbanks Broadcasting era was famous for playing a song and then going right into a commercial, as was WNAP. I loved the Heller WIBC jingles that they played in the 70's and 80's, supplimented by the Fairwest sets in the 80's. As best I remember, they played the jingles right up till the music died.

Thank you MacOconnor...

There were many songs I forgot about when I made the original list.....here is a top 10 of mine for a different day......

10. Diamond Girl - Seals & Crofts

9. Nights are Forever Without You - England Dan & John Ford Coley (The hardest rocking soft rock song ever)

8. Loves Theme - Love Unlimited Orchestra

7. Joy - Apollo 100 (later revived by Dirk Diggler practicing karate)

6. Nobody Does it Better - Carly Simon (One of the best Bond songs ever)

5. Classical Gas - Mason Williams

4. When Will I See You Again - Three Degrees

3. I'm Not in Love - 10cc (big boys don't cry)

2. Please Come to Boston - Dave Loggins (The best soft rocker ever!)

1. My Little Town - Simon & Garfunkel (I heard that at the breakfast table a lot....how did I forget that?)

Being a student of the 1974-76 WIBC (if you're going to steal, steal from the best!) I recall that the first song out of the top of the hour newscast was MOR-ish Ray Coniff was still doing covers of pop songs so it wouldn't be unusual to hear him in the first position. Another WIBC classic LP was Hugo Montenegro's "Colors of Love" because the vocals were by the Ron Hicklin singers....the same singers on the jingle package.

If I remember correctly the evening jock on WIBC circa 1974 was Nat Humphries. Any one know what ever became of him?

Ultimate trivia....remember, "Wonderful Summer" by Robin Ward (circa 1963 or so)? Her real name is Jackie Ward and she was the lead female in the Ron Hicklin Singers.

When heading to the Speedway from Cincy every May, we would listen to IBC because of the track coverage. On time trial weekends they would play music when nothing was going on. So, these are my top ten from the early 80's:
1. Reunited/Peaches and Herb
2. It's Gonna Take A Miricle/Deniece Williams
3. What Are We Doing In Love/Dottie West & Kenny Rogers
4. I Just Wanna Stop/Gino Vannelli
5. Hearts/Marty Balin
6. I Love You/Climax Blues Band
7. The Closer I Get To You/Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway
8. With A Little Luck/Paul McCartney
9. Escape/Rupert Holmes
10. You're The Only Woman/Ambrosia

What a great station it was, better than anyone on the AM dial in Southwest Ohio. I liked it so much, I would do my best to tune it in Cincinnati. Somedays it would come in good, especially at night. Besides some of the personalities still there from yesteryear, they still use that same legal I.D. and it is, and always was awsome.

The only person from the 80s still on the air there now must be Jeff Pigeon. Big John Gillis is gone now after 25+ years. Bob Lamey will be heard on 1070 again though with the Colts returning to WIBC. Orly Knutson was on WIBC in the 60s, 70s & maybe the 80s. He's now doing part time work on one of their sister stations.

Orly was still there in June of 1984 as I have an aircheck of him doing his show.

Jerry Baker did sports and also had a music show, as did Reb Porter.
