The Track = Light Jack

So is it me, or is THE TRACK just a more conservative version of jack? They both focus on bassically the same era of music 70s and 80s, except WTPI plays more AC titles, and no harder edge Rock Stuff. If Jack is a Variety CHR, so to speak, then WTPI is just a watered down Variety AC. Their is no doubt, that they are focusing on taking a peace out of the older, or more conservative Jack Audience, they play almost the same music, but THE TRACK is obviously more Work/Office friendly, since you dont have to worry about AC-DC, Aerosmith, or Van Halen coming on, at the dentist office, while giving someone a filling. Its like WTPI is trying to Squeeze right between JACK, and B-105.7. ANY THOUGHTS?????

I totally agree. It is what basic top 40 was throughout the 60's through the early 80's, an inclusive mix of what we would nowadays call classic rock, R & B soul, AC, country and disco. The "new" elements not found in any other Indy AC station are the disco hits and the more female-leaning aspects of AC. (When is the last time you heard the Carpenters on ANY station in Indy - Oldies, AC or otherwise). The variety of music truly seems to represent what top 40 radio was back then (minus the acid rock and novelty songs, of course!)

There does seem to be some repitition which might begin to wear a bit. I had not heard "Got to Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn in 25 years. I've heard it 3 times since Monday (that's probably 2 times too many!).

Still, a great signal with good stereo seperation and pretty good production elements. Jeff Davis is a heritage broadcaster and it's great to hear his voice (I can close my eyes and almost hear...'Jeff Davis...W...L..S!!') About the only guys who can do it better might be either Chuck Riley or Charlie Van Dyke! When Chuck Riley does a great liner leading into a song (like he did over at WNAP - "The Wrath of the Buzzard...."), to me the song just sounds better! Some jingles on The Track might be nice though, just to mix it up a bit with the liners.

Right on MW,

I spent the day in Indy on Wed. and listened to both Jack and Track and the Track is exactly how you describe it. I liked it. It is a lot like our 92.5 The Chief here in Champaign, IL. Our Chief plays a bit more 80's dance stuff here and there but basically the same kind of station. I have really enjoyed listening to it and the Track was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed Jack-FM as well but couldn't figure out why they would air a listener's response that went like this: "I wish Gold was back on the air, I've never listen to Jack-FM again, you lost this listener for good". My only guess is that Jack has a sarcastic attitude and airs that stuff to mock it. If the Track does what the Chief here has done, the playlist will begin opening up much bigger than now!!

You're right Jingle Freak, this station is going to do well with this music mix. The format sounds like what other posts have called for, in that it's based on true Top-40 playlists. I grew up listening to the legendary WLS in Chicago which had quite a variety of music and was an outstanding station with equally legendary jocks like Larry Lujack, Bob Serott, John Landecker and others. To do well however, The Track will need to eventually have live personalities and local involvement, not just play the music.

Yeah I noticed today, that they also throw in some 70s disco, 80s HI-NRG Dance, and stuff like that in the mix. So they have a little bit of Rhythmic AC thrown in for good measure.

just hard to believe that some of the jocks at TPI had been there soooo long and are so easily tossed to the side

I listened to The Track online....because they are new...something between everything...which is great....but it is really tiring after a while...They could REALLY use a jingle package...even just some shouts would help out.

Maybe add a female VO to the mix....

or for god's sake put Jerry Curtis and the crew back on....there's a neat way to go against jack....jack lite with jocks

since none of em actually "got fired"....i think a very similar line up is coming back...IMO

just a way to generate some listeners and re-brand without a huge promotion....
(as someone else pointed out...got me thinking)
new name...lots of tunes in a row...no jocks (for now) could get some people back to the freq.
Edited by deepsouth on 10/08/05 08:05 PM.
