The Trend Saga

To those that buried MOVIN, guess ya got it wrong. To those that buried JACK, guess ya got it wrong. To those that thought KCMS wasn't real, guess ya got it wrong. Big ya ya surprises of the first trend of summer: kcms number one, MOVIN finishes the month #2 18-34 just behind KUBE, KWJZ rolls, KMPS and KPLZ continue to grow (even mamma doesn't get what's up with that). ::) Big losers were KBKS (rumors abound of a full shakeup with a new consultant in town), KNDD and THE WOLF. All AM's are in trouble. No AM, except Sports Radio was higher than 15th, even in mornings.:-[ ON Fm Monti was number two 18-34 and top five 25-54 for the month of July. Go GIRL! Who called it, who knew it. Ya ya sisterhood. Mamma knows best! ;D

I can't let this just go. How can KMPS and KPLZ be growing in share? This is not one isolate trend, but a pattern over the last couple of months and this lady don't get it ??? You can't tell me that a tired, worn out Country station can be knocking down the WOLF. The talent, production and approach of the WOLF are much stronger. KMPS not only beats them 25-54, but 18-34 in the last trend. HOW??? KPLZ is a ya ya mess. I listened last week in town and heard Big N Rich (who I happen to like), next to Umbrella by Rhianna, next to John Mayer and Madonna. What the hell kinda format is that??? How Bob Rivers, Ichiybod and K@A survive tries mamma's patience. Some things make sense, like MOVIN, MOnti, the fall of KBKS, END and some jsut don't add up. Save two stations out of fifty, mamma's doing pretty damn well keeping up on this old market and that is ya ya good 8)

Mama, your posts are absolutely hilarious, dispite the fact many of us know who you are...

KPLZ's change to a more hit-oriented format seems to have paid off. I've been wanting them to do that for awhile now.

But, Mama....come on....your 'yo act is just a little bit obvious to some of us. Roses are red, violets are blue, we know what city to connect you To. But I will move on now... :D

Having known Lisa A., I can tell you she wouldn't waste her time posting on here and if she did, she is far too intelligent to write dumbed down posts like the ones Mama writes. There's no doubt the poster works at Movin', maybe a promo director or sales assistant, but I can almost guarantee you that it is not Lisa.

I am laughing so hard, it hurts. This is why I come to this board. I'll respond, though I am sure the above posters aren't serious:

KQMV gets a monthly spike from time to time, but on balance are a mid two share demo station. July was a huge summer spike for them. I'll bet they become a summer station in Seattle. Time will tell.

KMPS is not growing in share, but remains a strong Country station. On a four book they are always top three in the market and easily beat KWFF in all demos except 18-34. KMPS cut inventory, cleaned up the music and remain on top. They will give KWFF the younger demo.

KPLZ has always been a player 25-54 women. Their PD has been called everything from lame, aging and washed up on this board. Still the station finds a way to reinvent itself. The move to play CHR and Country with HOT/AC made several months ago seems to be paying off. Whether it truly works or not in the adult demos, KPLZ will remains a stronger buy in women 25-54 and is distancing itself from KRWM.

KCMS benefits from market compression and lack of FM Christian stations in this market. KRWM is being hurt by them, but this happens every Spring and Summer. In Fall and Winter, KRWM will overtake KCMS, due to Christmas music. It is a normal pattern.

Ichybod remains a player and is always top three 25-54 adults on a four book. Rivers remains a player on a four book is always top three 25-54 men. Kent and Alan remain players and on a four book are always top three 25-54 women. What is more disturbing is that I have heard all three shows are just a year or so away from the end of their contracts. At least one plans on retiring. While this board enjoys mocking these older talents, I suspect they will be missed and their shoes hard to fill after a couple of decades on the air. The fact they still remain on top with market compression and new stations attacking is quite unusual.

I would say KCMS benefits from the lack of a KLSY in the market! Portland has a decent CC station but still has K103. KCMS has been there for decades. What else has changed? By the way, K103 is becoming market dominant! Bruce must be pretty happy about that.

K103 has been a leader in PDX for a long time ... just as "Lite" in New York has led the pack for a long time. People find those stations and establish loyalty ... and the stations don't rock the boat with massive change so they tend to keep that long-term relationship going. They are both "the station the whole family can agree on" (assuming all the KIDS in the family have had a lobotomy).

K103 has been a leader for many years. They haven't been THE leader until the last 3 books! In the last book, they were #1 in just about any demo you would want!

What's up with talking about a lame soft ac in Portland on the seattle boards? Market 26 ain't the same as market 13 in competition or talent. Didn't the K-103 morning dude wash out here in Seattle?
The summer trend was about as expected. No one looks at the summer book anyway. KCMS did the same deal last year and KMPS too. WOLF is doin fine. KISS remains sick as a dawg, so does the END. STAR's move to play COuntry continues to pay off for them.
I have also heard that the "big Three" morning shows all have their contracts expire in the next 18 months or so. Will Rivers, K@A and Ichabod retire, switch stations, leave the market? My bet is the iether retire, reup, or switch stations. They got more equity here than they would in another city.
