The point is there is no 39% rule in radio. iHeart has the most stations, so it can be predictive of what will happen in TV when the 39% rule is abolished.

Nexstar won't be a fully "national" company either. I think they will be in 85% of US homes.

Carr is saying that giving Nexstar national scale will give it revenue resources it can spend on local news. My view is that if the money comes from national sales, it will support national programming. That's what we've already seen with iHeart.

FCC chair Brendan Carr spoke with The Hill’s Julia Manchester at Wednesday’s Hill Nation Summit, where he said an Aug. 6 vote to allow the FCC to, on a case-by-case basis, lift a limit on the number of stations a broadcaster owns is vital to the survival of the medium.

“It’s really been holding back local broadcasters from reaching the scale necessary to invest in local news and journalism reporting,” Carr said.

Local broadcasters don't own these stations. Big national corporations do. Unless the FCC requires TV companies to do local news, it will follow the pattern we've seen in radio. Giving Nexstar all these stations simply turns them into another network. Their actions this past week replacing CBS with CW at a number of their stations is proof of their intent.
