The Twister Flip June 23rd

All Access is reporting that The Twister is set to flip to "Soft Oldies" on June 23rd.

Not my cup of tea at all, but it should do better than the previous format.

If it is indeed the "Timeless Favorites" format, this will be a true return to Memories 96.7. "Timeless" is what evolved from combining the Memories and the old Stardust formats at ABC. (Really, there's plenty more "Memories" in there and very little "Stardust.") Laurie Bandemir was the PD over the corporate Memories format (and jocked for it as well,) and, far as I know, she's now over the combined "Timeless" format (replacing Bud Buschardt.)

So that makes TWO "I told ya so's" so far this year...the return of "The Eagle," and the return of "Memories." What's next, Q-102? Maximum Hits 92.5? Mellow 102.9? 1310-WRR? CD-107.5? :D

And, to save some folks a phone call, Fast Eddie Coyle told me yesterday that he is in no way involved with 96.7 nor will he be jocking for them.

"True Oldies" would have made more sense, financially. Even ABC's contemporary gospel format could have survived, at the expense of KSOC and KRNB (who are only surviving by default, with The Oasis gone.)

At least this will be a genre of music that we don't get on local airwaves. Different is good. (Can they call it, "Melodies 96.7"? Rolls off the tongue like the old name...)

Since my boss is out of town ;D I have searched variations of
timeless967
timelessfavorites967
memories967
melodies967
lovefm967
love967

and none are registered domains - the only thing that comes up still is the trueoldies967 and trueoldies967fm both registered on May 13th through GoDaddy just like trueoldies1067fm in Atlanta. Guess we'll just have to wait until Monday. I just wish they'd have a little fun with the flip between now and then. Simulcast other stations from around the country - something different every hour - play the Bob Newhart Show - construction noises... ANYTHING but "This Toen Needs a Bar" ::)

How do you figure?

True oldies goes head-to-head with KLUV. Soft oldies flanks KLUV on the oldies front, provides an outlet for the old Memories 96.7 crowd,(and the smooth jazz listeners to boot) gives the KAAM listeners a better quality (non AM) outlet, AND is probably going to be safe for the whole family, which means they can promote themselves as an alternative to KLTY.

And while yes KLTY will still keep their religious audience, I know a number of soccer mom types who listen to KLTY not because of the music, but because they don't have to worry about content.

I remember back in 1996, when 103.5 FM in New York simulcast five then-sister stations from the Evergreen empire: Rock 103.5/Chicago (with Mancow), 92.3 The Beat/Los Angeles (before moving to 100.3 and later flipping to The Sound), and a few others.

KSST is automated excpt mornings with ABC's Timeless format. "L1" is thinking like a consultant. The "true Oldies format" would have been better and would siphon from Kluv as well as KVIL.
WHAT?!
No its not.

And would this be the project that Ron "The New Paul Harvey" Chapman has been "helping" on?

It will probably be similar to Citadel's LOVE 105 in Minneapolis. That station has been through several formats over the years and is finally pulling some numbers with Soft Oldies. I like the format personally, they play songs you never hear anymore like Lobo-"Me and you and a dog named Boo". Surprisingly in the Twin Cities this format hasn't hurt the oldies/classic hits station, they have actually gone up. It's the heritage soft AC that is taking a hit.

If this will be anything like Sunny, I will definitely be digging it!

No, i'm thinking like what I am, someone with 30 years of programming experience who's NEVER worked as a consultant.

And what my programming experience tells me is what I said- true oldies goes head to head with KLUV. A battle, which has been pointed out ad nauseum around here, KLUV will win because they have a better signal, heritage calls, dominant position right now, etc.

But by going soft oldies, they flank KLUV. Which means KLUV has to rexamine their playlist and maybe drop songs they have in common, maybe drop songs that rock too hard (because if Citadel thinks there's a market for soft oldies, they probably have something (research? focus groups? diary entries?) that tell them people may not like some of the more classic rock-y stuff KLUV is playing) etc.

By going soft oldies, they pick up some of the KLUV audience, and they probably pick up the Old Sunny 96.7 listeners, (whereever they've been hanging out), people who think KVIl is too "modern" (playing Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, etc), people who want unobtrusive background music (like my dentist, who used to play The Oasis in the office)

I have a theory why they are letting the same ten Twister songs play over and over... no matter what you put on after this - it is bound to sound better. Even Vietnamese Hip Hop would be better than this country @$%&. I am also losing cinfidence in Citadel's ability to run a major market radio station. :-X
