Not so fast there, remember what KGXM's signal was like back on 106.5 prior to the 106.7 move and boosted the signal to a full class C. I will agree with you that the signal is spotty in some areas of the Metroplex. I will be riding my bike in Carrollton area and the signal will fade in and out on my walkman, and I'm using a good Sony walkman. Even on my mother's Santa Fe with that stubby POS antenna it can't fully pull in the signal. The signal meter on radio info shows it as a moderate signal in Dallas.<P ID="signature">______________

Get rid of that braodband ceramic filter on the antenna. It has about 20 dB loss. I string a wire out connected to the FM antenna input, and get everything within a hundred miles with no trouble (Sony SRF-A1 walkman)

Pioneer Supertuner 3 - solid as a rock from way East of Mesquite to Seymour, TX. Fairly good reception to Guthrie and sometimes Dickens in the West.

At home with a Godar indoor antenna - almost pegs the signal meter on a Heathkit AJ-15 in Plano - Good yagi and it almost overloads.

Nothing moderate about that signal! People need better radios.

When I did the news on the old Memories on that frequency, I about went nuts trying to hear the air signal on a small, indoor antenna.

Often the signal was non-existent even at Metro near I-35 and 635.

But Bruce is right -- no antenna, no signal.

Crazy Idea for Chuck ---

(1) Buy out KXEZ 92.1, already an oldies station serving Collin county.
(2) Turn around and sell KXEZ to the folks at KTFW 92.1 - who desperately want to upgrade to cover all of the metroplex. They take KXEZ silent and get their upgrade. (Twister fans eventually switch over to 92.1.)
(3) Use the proceeds to buy 96.7, which has a much better signal than KXEZ, run oldies. You at least get the old Collin county audience, plus more audience all over the metroplex that like the 50's and 60's better than the 60's and 70's. Older people - more apt to have a bit of near fringe DX saavy and good equipment.

If it could all be done simultaneously with lots of publicity for the audiences involved - almost painless for them. And probably - almost would pay for itself.

One big problem: Ken Jones says he will never sell KXEZ at any price.

Very true. Ken believes (and he is correct)that the population around Farmersville,Wylie,Frisco, McKinney will grow rapidly. The growth is underway. He is keeping the station for his kids. The kids have expressed at times no real interest in it.

Of course - until recently it was very evident that he didn't care at all about KXEZ - the equipment was breaking down, for a two year period it was in mono most of the time. The stereo separation still isn't that great. I thought he was pouring all of his money into 95.3, and 92.1 was just an "also ran" that got attention seldom, if ever.

As for growth in the area, if what I heard from a Radio Disney staffer three years ago is true - and Disney builds theme parks up there, it will be one solid city from McKinney to Sherman. Maybe that is part of the reason for the KLAK move-in, too. And KMAD ---

For Ken, radio is simply a means to an end -- politics.

He would like to succeed Ralph Hall in Congress, if Ralph ever gives up his seat.

KXEZ may not be the worst facility I ever worked at, but I just cannot remember a worse one.

The station could be a little gem, yet it is neglected and so are the employees. That is what Ken and I battled over time and again.

Ken would be the worst Congressman ever in modern history. As far as Disney Goes.my sources in Anaheim said they are also looking at property around fm 1957 and Hiway 16 north of San Antonio close to Sea World.

I've heard that one, too. The story I heard was that Eisner wanted to build in SA, but went to one of the parks there and was stung by a bee. After noticing bees all over, it put an end to that. Of course, Eisner is out now so SA may be back in the running. One thing is for sure - when Eisner left, so did his dream of the "American Experience" park. There were Houston rumors, but that turned out to be Katy Mills mall. Disney has a record of buying land, improving it, then selling it. There is no evidence of activity anywhere along 75 North of McKinney, though.
