The Two Talk Stations With Dismal Ratings

WWRL has politically progressive talk programming. WNYM's programming is the opposite, conservative. But what they both have in common is that they are both near the bottom of the ratings list.
Now that Air America no longer exists, I wonder whether WWRL gets paid a considerable amount to air the various talk shows that they clear, despite their awful signal. Perhaps a number of producers of politically progressive shows are willing to fork over a considerable amount to the station, just so they can tell advertisers that they can be heard in the New York market?
Is perhaps the same true for WNYM? Their signal is better, but it seems that the average radio listener is not even aware that they have political programming. But perhaps Salem, the owner, believes it is important to advertisers that they clear their conservative talk shows in this area. It seems that a third station offering conservative talk shows in this market, in addition to WABC and WOR, may be oversaturation.

The talk station that NY really needs is one that has 50-75% local programming and concentrates on issues relevant to the NY Tri-State area. And yes, very likely on FM. Spoken word formats have successfully migrated to FM in many markets. Not shock talk like FREE-FM, but mainstream, center left or center right.

Very true, NY doesn't need another conservative talk station. That's one reason I don't think we'll have Rush Radio in NY. Also, CC has no place to put it since they can't legally or financially purchase more FMs in NY. CCs NY FM music stations are doing too well to justify blowing one up for Rush & Co.

WABC and WOR are very deficient in covering local issues. WABC doesn't even sound like a NY radio station, other than traffic and weather and Mark Simone and Bob Grant on weekends. Other than John Gambling and Joan Hamburg, most of WOR's programming is from the WOR Radio Network.

Talkradio in markets of all sizes outside NY is far superior. Sad but true! :(

If you think about it, wouldn't one think that was why Salem vicariously purchased the frequency - so that they could clear their talk talent in Market No. 1?

And besides, isn't Clear Channel paying WOR to clear "Coast To Coast"? Beck, too, perhaps?

The reason why WWRL has dismal ratings is because not only it's poor signal but the station is a Black liberal (Progressive) talk station. Air America was an experiment that failed.

WWRL would quadruple their ratings if they switch to Classic Soul (R&B of the 50s, 60s and 70s), but still may be below a 1 share.

Dont forget, Brian Lehrer on WNYC and Steve Malzberg is also doing a bit local talk.

Malzberg is on the WOR Radio Network, so he isn't exclusive to NY. Malzberg does beat Hannity in PM Drive. :)
