The U.S. Open (Golf) returns to NBC beginning THIS YEAR! Leaves FOX/FS1

https://www.golfchannel.com/news/nbc-reacquires-broadcast-rights-usgas-full-slate-championships

The main thing is this:

The U.S. Open was moved to September which would result in conflict with FOX's NFL coverage. So NBC picked it up while FOX is clearly no longer is interested in golf after failing to get PGA Tour rights.

Also The Golf Channel will broadcast the early rounds, just like The Open Championship.

This gives Golf Channel on NBC a huge slate of events (PGA Tour, Players Championship, U.S. Open, Open Championship, Ryder Cup) going forward.

When's the last major sports property that got rights cancelled before the contract was over? For that matter, why did FOX bother getting the U.S. Open if it wasn't sure of getting PGA rights?

Did CBS ever consider bidding on the U.S. Open golf coverage to supplement the Masters and most of the rest of the PGA Tour?

I mostly only watch golf only if it's on CBS.

I sort of suspect that CBS is in the same boat as Fox with the NFL...
And NBC owns The Golf Channel, so for technical and personnel logistics, I would think the PGA and the USGA would like their namesake channel to carry the tournaments that matter, excepting The Masters...a CBS tradition as we know.
As for coverage between CBS and NBC...I too lean toward CBS' golf coverage, Jim Nantz aside. Sir Nick Faldo and Ian Baker-Finch are spot on at their craft in the booth or on course.
