The Uniqueness of Fox

Fox TV has been a "unique" network for years now because it is not run like the other big networks in terms of news and programming. All of the network's morning newscasts are local and tailored to a particular market, unlike NBC having the Today Show or Good Morning America on ABC. The network is also without a traditional primetime newscast at 6:30 pm, instead showing Geraldo at Large. In addition, FOX only offers a two-hour block of primetime programming, which is an hour less when compared to the other three major networks. Why do you think Fox has kept itself out of the network arena in terms of news and programming? Do you think Fox will ever become more of a traditional network in the future like the other big three?

I doubt things will change. Fox is wise to stay out of the evening news arena, as it's demographic suicide, especially since they skew younger to begin with. And their 10:00/9:00 local news fills a niche, as it's the only prime time newscast in many markets.

I always wonder about FOXs ability which is largely overseen by the extremely deep pockets of Murdoch.I was under the impression part of the appeal to the non-owned Fox stations was the amount of local time they station could sellIn many ways Fox changed the business model of TV. For instance holding CBS hostage in NYC, Chicago and LA with UPN.Like Fox's conservativism. I really think this has less to do with ideology than money. Murdoch saw that news, as a whole, is liberal. Even in print or radio it always tended to slant liberal. So he simply slanted conservative, only to make a profit. For some reason I get the impression that if Murdoch thought he could make more money from Fox News being liberal he'd do it.I think Murdoch's genius is being able to find smaller unfilled markets and using his deep pockets to exploit it.

All liberals say the media is conservative...all conservatives say the media is liberal. I just want the freaking news without the hype and opinions.

Yes, I forget the book's title and author, but I read in it where Rupe was a Communist in his college days.ixnay

As to why Fox doesn't do a 6:30 national newscast, there areessentially two reasons, as I understand it. First, Murdoch thinksthe network nightly news is a dinosaur; second, many Fox affiliates(not o&os) were independent and had sitcom blocks from 6 to 8which made (and still make) a ton of money, and those stations arenot willing to surrender the half-hour to the network.Doing a late local news at 10/9 Central has also been a goldminefor Fox stations; last I heard, the 9 PM news on WBRC/6 Birminghamwas the top-rated newscast in the market. Given that viewers inthe Central and Mountain time zones traditionally watch the localnews at 10 instead of 6, even on ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates, itstands to reason that a pre-11 PM news is going to clean up; peoplecan watch the news and get to bed earlier. And that's anywhere;New York and LA independents did it for years. To the poster in Atlanta who pointed out that Geraldo At Large is onthere at 7: WAGA's local news doesn't end until 7. WGHP Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point runs Geraldo's show at 6:30.I'm hearing that Murdoch is getting very friendly with Hillary RodhamClinton. If that results in a Democratic/liberal spin on the news onFox News Channel, what is that going to do for the network's credibility?A LOT of people watch FNC BECAUSE they think the other networks havea liberal bias. What can they expect now?

Geraldo

WALA in Mobile, Alabama doesn't show Geraldo At Large at all. Are you sure this is a Fox show and not syndicated?

Sorry about the misconception with Geraldo At Large. I meant that instead of showing a 6:30 pm newscast, FOX shows Geraldo in place of that at some time in the evening. I don't know if it's syndicated or not. Perhaps only the O&O stations show it.

The show is syndicated by Fox and airs on all owned and opperated stations, but also airs on other stations in other cities. It replaced A Current Affair last fall.

WTTG-5 Washington and WTXF-29 Philadelphia both show Geraldo at 11:00pm. Both are Fox O&Os.WBFF-45 Baltimore (Sinclair-owned) doesn't show Geraldo.ixnay

Classic example is right here in Denver where FOX O&O KDVR 31 airs it @ 10:00 PM rather than 6:30 PM. I'm guessing tis is because a 6:30 PM airing would be suicidal considering their competition would be sitcoms on 2 and 20, Hollywood Squares on CBS O&O KCNC 4, Wheel Of Fortune on KMGH 7 and Entertainment Tonight on KUSA 9).Something tells me that BART SIMPSON would be better competition..... :D 8)Gee, i wonder why....... :)Cheers :)Pat
