The Universal WTOS thread

Decided to do something constructive for once. Jamie, I have set an all-purpose WTOS thread up especially for you and those who want to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of WTOS's programming and the reception of WTOS. That way you won't have to derail other threads which previously had nothing to do with WTOS. Everybody wins!

Post away! ;)

Thank you BenKarlow.... If you didn't do it, I would have.

I guess my post for Jamie for finding out what 99.1 in Whitefield was doing didn't cut it.. This is a great idea ! :D
Where Jamie goes to college, it's way up high and with your dorm is facing right place, FM reception is awesome ! Been there, before docket 80-90.. WTOS just blasts in there at the, "Harvard on the Hill", though I loved their format in the 80's before going to classic rock.. Loved the midnight signoffs, though on weekends we were blessed till 1:00 am.. Post away Jamie !

Re: The Universal WTOS thread retro!!!!!

Does anybody remember WTOS back around 1981-1984 when they were known as "The Rock of Maine"??? At that time, they were a new wave/alternative based rock station, that still went deep into Classic Rock too. The air staff included among others, Program Director
Kent Thurston, Annie Airheart and JC. It was the early 1980s equivalent of modern day WEQX. That was the start of their second incarnation as a Rock station. Previously, WTOS had been an AOR/Progressive Rock station during much of the 70s, but flipped to an automated Top 40 format for a couple of years around 1979.

hello everyone :)
I tried my best on the spelling and I can't edit past the time limit so don't shoot me if I did not spell something or pronounce something correctly...
I found TOS by in the Fall of 2004 and have listened ever since then. I have gone through the Best of times and have been driven nuts when there are signal issues.
I have liked TOS better than any rock station in the USA and it was a big change from my boarding school high school with WCCC, or at home k-rock. don't get me wrong I love northeast stations like WCCC 106.9 /WAAF 107.3 /WLZX 99.3, 94.1 WHJY, 955 WBRU, Rock 101.1, 101.7 WVRR, 94.1 WYSP, 93.3 WMMR ( 92.3 k-rock because its the only rock I get in the NYC area) the list is endless.. however, the Talent and localism of TOS as Really made it so I have gotten Too attatched sometimes. No other radio station will take redneckism to the extreme. WCCC I love but Music wise TOS beats anyone... they even have cool shows like Eddie Trunk 6-9am on sundays Hard Rock and Heavy Metal on an early sunday morning you can't get any better than that! ( ET is the life savor of metal in NYC ) The Tour Bus, Hard Drive etc.
there were many stories about the Jocks that WWLR Dj's used to talk about. Unfortunately Times and people have changed. Many college kids and Faculty (I caught one faculty member listening online the other day!) still listen to TOS however I seem to be the only one listening to the radio in the college area anymore. I think its more of the constant weak signal issues making people slowly forget its there. I love it so much that when the they have had signal issues I will wait week in and week out until it comes back... sure enough after 3 months of tourture with a weak signal,
I am glad TOS is cranked at full power right now. Like I said its been only back at full strength for 2 weeks. when at Full like today, I can listen to them on some parts of I-91 up to Jay Peak as well as Route 100. At Jay peak because it faces east, TOS Bounces off pretty clearly except at summit and at the base like today skiing in the glades cranking TOS on the walkman can't go wrong! In the past couple months, It was reported that it was a full strength however, there was no sign of it on I-91 oranywhere except the strongest spots like Lyndon Center. other places around the area it was either WKOL 105 or static. Since/when it is at full strength It can be fun to drive on the back roads that are all dirt listening to Just hard rock songs. hit up an all request hour/evening TOS is even better rocking harder.
I wish one day they could see if the FCC could give em an LP for areas like here in VT where no one covers the frequency or ajacent one. I doubt that could ever happen.
I can't seem to listen to TOS online for a few reasons, 1 the audio quality, 2. the stream never works right on a mac.. 3. on online stream is not the same as the spirit of listening online.

lastly, my Dream job? WTOS sure... however I want to aim more on getting a heavy metal show like Eddie Trunk or Be a DJ on WCCC or K-rock. I seem to only be good on the radio when I am unscripted on a time limit...

I wish I could Listen to CHOM here but why did the FCC ever let magic change frequencys.. put it back on 98.3 its a dead frequency here UGH!!!

jo jo.. I have not been to littleton yet but, Apple-bees or wal*mart will hopefully be calling my name soon! I Know TOS Is Really rockin in littleton now and when I am there would like to figure out how 99.1 is doing for you...

wow.. time for me to relax and listen to TOS Up in Lyndonville VT

Jamie, I remember WTOS as a kid when I camped in Maine (1994ish) and eventually moved there in 2001 before cheapchannel took them over back when Jay Knight was one of the best nighttime DJ's and miss TOS down here in Old Orchard Beach thanx to a lousy FCC decision to let WJZP invade the signal in Portland and to the south. Before damn WJZP, WTOS was nearly a local there.

I grew up about 5 houses away from Chris Rush... We used to go to Sunday School together. I sat next to him in Biology in High School. We used to play Atari alot. He is a good guy...

Jay Knight worked with me for a while, I left Clear Channel Bangor before he did. He is another good guy, he's still on overnights, on WKIT on weekends.

That having been said. I HATE SLIPNOT. I wish they didn't exist. I guess I'm old now. I am gonna go play my 45's, and pine for the day when rock was rock and roll was roll.

Bill DaButler

Just a minor correction, Bill, Jay Knight is doing Saturday 7P-Mid on WKIT, not overnights, doing a great job, too.I remember when Chris Rush did some weekend overnights on 'KIT when they were still downtown, one of his first radio gigs, if not THE first, not certain about that. He was good back then, too, a natural.

Thanks Knight, my bad... I think Chris got his start at the all hit Fox 104.7 teching Amercian top 40, but I could be wrong.

I totally loved WTOS-FM from 1982 to 87.. Had to make sure my dorm rooms faced East to get a good signal from Sugarloaf. (I thought Jamie would appreciate that one) The Rock of Maine.. Some of their jocks went south to Boston.. Duane Bruce was a TOSer who surfaced on WFNX in the late 80' for example. You never knew what song you'd hear next, but who cares, it was so good on the ears !! Anybody remember 96 W- EEEEEMMMMMMM-R ??

Oh gawddd!!!!! That is a station I haven't thought of in years! They came on in the summer of 1983 out of Rumford, Me. A big signal too!!! They were cool...Kind of a Top 40/AOR hybrid like the old 105.9-WIGY was in those days, only better. Plus Top 40 music briefly improved around 1983/1984 which didn't hurt their format either. I left Maine at the end of 1984, and I never really heard them again. How long did they last???

I'm sure you are right, Bill. Perhaps the 'KIT overnights was his first actual on-air gig? Anyone know of anything prior? Jump in here anytime, Rush!

In case anyone is interested... WEMR is now located in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania on 1460-AM. The 'sister' FM was 107.7 but the call was replaced by WGMF when the format changed. The WEMR-FM call is currently unassigned.

(Carry on...)

Actually the station that he was referring to was WWMR.....

The jocks used to really over do it on the "M" part of the call letters like the famous W EEEEEENNNNNNNNN BC. Some notibles who cut their teeth their I believe.. Ben Hamilton, Russ Murley, George Simpson. The had some really campy jingles and top hour ID's at one time as well.. Not sure when 96 WMR went to the religious broadcasters from Boston..

The signal Is hanging despite the Ice storm here at my apartment I rent in ST. Jay VT within a quarter mile of the Museum where the St.JAy weather observation is taken. During the storm tonight I heard only a few very quick hick-ups where Kool 105 came in. This was probably when an airplane is flying overhead.. maybe a quick meteor scatter or Wind shaking the transmitter. Any guesses?
I congratulate FISH for keeping TOS roc-kin at full power!!! thank you!
My Set-UP
I have my Good ole Indoor/Outdoor Terk Fm 50 pro In the back yard in the snow of the place i'm in, with a temporary 50 FT cable going through the back door then into my 1 room apartment.. to my sangean HD-tuner. Haven't figured out how to get 99.9 the buzz and TOS at the same time but its nice to know I can get both however I leave it on TOS.
;D

Jo Jo.. what you think of my set-up I My radio Dial is full here in ST Jay with the Terk Antenna out in the yard ;)

Wow, what the hell are you doing living in St. Jay ? Housing that tight in Lyndonville ? I guess that's a good problem for the area.. Or have you drove every landlord crazy in the 05851 zip code with your antenna ?? ::) Sounds like a good set up, no amp I take it.. I resided in East Burke for a while up high near the Burklyn Mansion while in my "Harvard on the Hill" days.. I put an FM antenna on the house, and rigged it right into my trusty old Marantz receiver.. Used to pick up BCN, 103.3, WCRB, WHJY (Before WFTN came on) when I aimed it south. I still have a tape of me calling in a request to WBCN.. The jock could not believe me, and she called me back.. Funny. This was way before cell phones and computers. WTOS, 96WMR, 106 WIGY and WBLM @ 107.5 were easy gets, WMGX too. TV reception sucked there, it was either Channel 8 WMTW, or CHLT-TV Channel 7 from Sherbrooke in French.. For whatever geographical reasons, Ch. 3, 5, 22, and 33 were very tough to get.. How's that fer yah Jamie.. "Jo Jo"

Haha! actually I am subletting an apartment here for someone who has gotten an internship in NYC. This is the 1st apartment. I have gotten its kind of nice many college students actually have had to fan out up to an hour away now! I cannot get TOS that well without the amp for the FM-50 Terk antenna probably because of Kix 105.5 being local... Its amazing what I can pull in on this thing here... what frequency do you want me to try? I know @ LSC in the Big lot WBCN and WJMN came in during the Humid months with DX did you ever get it in the winter?

As for TV. I don't get anything on analog.. WCAX very blurry Fox 44 very faint as well. always wanted to try digital...

If I come back here in future semesters... what you suggest for housing. ( e-mail me! link in profile )
