The Valley's #1 News & Talk Station

Not only numero uno in news and talk, but the number one 12+ station in any language. Period. Here's P2 (Mar/Apr/May)

1 KFWhyEye (no need to ever hire another Dude or Chick Boss...it's on autopilot)
2 KEZ
3 KUPD/KYOT/KOOL
4 KMLE/KZZP
5 KHOT/KNIX/KMXP
6 KT'R (still the #2 news & talk station in spite of what the Master Blogger sez)
7 KQMR/KSLX
8 KDKB
9 KPKX
10 KLNZ

Now, something that matters... 25-54 (there is a reason Arbitron gives away 12+... it is of no value).

KUPD, KXMP, KHOT, KQMR, KFYI, KDKB, KESZ, KOOL (on a real comeback... more than doubling in 4 months), KPKX, KYOT, KZZP, KMLE, KSLX, KTAR-FM (who beat KFYI in May discreet month) KVIB. KKFR, KEDJ, KKNT.

In cume 25-54, both KTAR-FM (by a real lot) and KTAR (by a lot) beat KFYI, which only won share due to very long TSL. In 12+ cume KTAR FM beats KFYI by a good margin, and KTAR AM beats it by a little.

Wow! The rhythmic stations really suffered this time around. KZON dropped to a 1.7! Ouch! I think that's the worst ratings they have had since they signed on a year ago! Same with Power, they dropped to a 1.8. I think KMVA is sitting at an even 1. What to do...what to do...

So the Master Blogger (where is he anyway?) touts the cume numbers,
and the "if we had a Chick or Dudeboss, he or she would tout the other
(AQH?) set-o-numbers."

What side do the twenty-something ad buyers buy from?

And who is Aunt Edna in Sun City listening to? ;)

The ad buyers look for the best CPPs and then run the "in price range" stations against a reach (cume) and frequency (function of AQH and TSL) formula to get the most efficient buy... which is why some stations get dropped. Some may duplicate cume too much, others may not be efficient cume enhancers.

The age of the buyer is not significant. The demos, R&F and CPP goals and other characteristics of the buy come, mostly, from the client and are memorialized in conferences between the media director and the AE and, probably, the client's marketing folks.

Something isn't right here. Where is KNIX?

Right after KTAR-FM. My bad.

Should read KTAR-FM, KNIX, KLNZ, KTAR AM, KVIB. I got distracted by the two KTAR's. KNIX had a dreadful May, by the way.

Judging by what I've been seeing on cable tv, it may be time for everyone in radio to start rethinking
the significance of 12+ ratings. While most of the commercials on cable are likely run of the schedule,
there are a lot products targeting teens on so-called adult shows.
When I started in radio, most 12 years olds didn't have considerable spending money, but
that day is long-gone. Teens are buying i-pods, cellphones, and many high-dollar products
or urging their parents to buy it for them. The 25-54 age group may purchase more items,
but there's a lot of money out there going around, and it may be fiscally foolish to ignore
the purchasing power of younger demographics.

Can someone please post left handed red headed women 35-44 who used to have Nebraska driver licenses and listen Sunday afternoon between 3 and 4pm?

Jeez...enough picking of the nit on a trend! All Nurse Jeff and I have to say is the Master Blogger would LOVE to have KFWhyEye's TSL "problem". But that's a tall order as many listeners still use KT'R for news and traffic, but don't stay long for the rest of their programming. And who can blame them? Try listening to Aunt Carlos, Glenn Beck, Mac 'n Cheese or Gaydos for more than a half hour. Talk about driving up memberships in the Hemlock Society!

We give KFWhyEye the Viagra Award for keeping it up book after book. They've hung in a lot longer than we thought. So a tip of the fez for 5~Fifty's staying power!

Until there are agency buys outside of 18-54, there will be no interest in 12-17.

KTAR-FM has a very respectable TSL; KFYI has a much smaller sales demo cume with much longer TSL. Anyone doing an optimized reach and frequency buy is likely to skip or minimize KFYI as very few spots capture the desired reach goal, without a need for a bigger buy.

KESZ and KTAR FM have similar, near identical TSL. KFYI has a group of "talk groupies" that is small but uses the station very heavily. With the approach of PPM, the KFYI proposition will be very damaging under the new system, and KTAR will likely win big.

None of this is nit picking. A trend has the same sample size as a book, for, after all, it is an 84 day rolling average, not a single month of measurement.

Ak-hack..until you can post without prejudice, you will be schooled by the more knowledgable.

Aint gonna happen...unless you want Nurse Jeff and me to do Toaster-Talk posting! Perhaps if we dined on guinea pig we'd be more knowledgable and better schooled! ;D

MAY 18-34 (What really matters to these stations)

KZON 4.0

KKFR 3.1

KMVA 1.2

MAY 12+

KZON 1.8

KKFR 1.4

KMVA 0.8

Just a hunch, but I think the talkers, particularly the more locally oriented KTAR, will do well in the next trend. The boring political talk is gone and replaced by topics that affect us all (gas).

Here at the bunkier, Barry Young is King, Gaydos is heir apparent.
