The "Voice of God" is stilled...

Damn! My second-most favorite voice over artist is gone now? This is terrible news. Now he can joke around with the late great Ernie Anderson and look down on New Orleans and Louisiana. Does this mean he'll say "...both of her cars were completely under water!" one last time? R.I.P. Don :(

"In a world where..."...there's no Don LaFontaine. A sad one.

Thanks to those Geico commercials, where he good naturedly poked a little fun at himself, Mr. and Mrs. Average American will know what he looks like and what his name is.

Too young. That's sad. When La Fontaine first hit the big time about a decade ago, Dateline NBC did a profile on him. During the story, they had him do the voice-over intro for the show in three of his distinctive voice styles. The most dramatic was the same tone and style he used for action/adventure movie ads. In a cute touch, he introduced Maria Shriver as "Mrs. Schwarzenegger."

This is a very sad day for the entertainment community. Don LaFontaine not only had a wonderful voice, but he seemed to be a great guy too. A real loss for all of us.

My condolences to his family and friends.

R.I.P. Don LaFontaine.

LaFontaine passed away a little over two years after Tony Jay, another great voice-over actor, also passed away. Both voices will surely be missed.

So who's left? Gary Owens had some sort of throat surgery some years ago, so enjoy him while you can.

Best VO guy now, IMO, is the guy who does the "I Love" shows on VH1 ("Because you still carry your homework in a Trapper Keeper--Admit it--"). Anyone know his name?

Is Mr. LaFontaine's voice in one of the current Mercedes Benz commercials I've seen in the last few days on ESPN (assuming it's a national spot)?
