The .wav

Have been listening off and on for some time now; one interesting thing about trying out vocal cuts not previously heard in nac is that I for one was reminded of the days of AOR freeform radio stations where it was possible to hear deeper vocal cuts alongside instrumentals, the very hard sounding stuff next to the sleepy soft, the days where dj's wrote their own playlists and aired their professionally assembled trainwrecks; although the days of rock freeform are gone for the most part, in nac, it should be noted that jazz never ran by itself from its inception; I'd say that most of the complaints that you have received are probably because some of the vocals maybe stuck out like a sore thumb to some of the listeners, but nonetheless, the art of keeping the nac category (jazz and vocals hybrid) relevant these days makes for very interesting listening. Keep up the great work and I'll listen with the tunein radio app (sounds great)!

I hear you, fadedglory. Thanks for tuning in and the kind words. I too use the TuneIn Radio Pro app daily, both during my commute and while at work, and it is second to none for $.99 cents. You can record the stream to your device (BlackBerry Curve in my case), and it traps the metadata and allows you to skip to specific tunes! Amazing technology!!

You make great points about the "out of the box" vocals. I loved the AOR approach as long as the guy spinning the tunes had great taste for music :D. But the transitions were EXTREMELY challenging for me. I did my best to build the code and create new playlist folders to soften them. But simple 15-20 second station tags weren't enough to diminish the shock value (i.e., trainwrecks). Not to beat a dead horse, as we go forward, we need to incorporate unconventional vocals WITH VIBE that stray from the safe Smooth Jazz and even old school NAC variety (i.e., Michael Franks, Michael Tomlinson and the like). And I think the 80s New Wave stuff and even tunes from the 1990s (both of which are underplayed these days) afford us an opportunity to change pace without causing diehards to tune out.

I thought you were more NAC, than smooth jazz anyway.

That's another thing. VLC does all that stuff and doesn't cost you a penny! Although I don't know if they've ported it to the Blackberry platform yet (somebody's probably working on it, I would imagine. ;o)

OK, my friends. I HAVE heard you. A couple of my trusted listeners on this board told me they had received e-mails over the past few weeks wondering WTH I was trying to accomplish with the new vocals. I guess they didn't have the heart to criticize the programming directly, and I respect that. But suffice it to say, it was a complete disaster with the guys who have been with me from the start--my bread and butter listeners. I became the guy I vowed never to become---someone who looked to grow his audience at any cost with little or no regard to his base. Never again. If I want to experiment, it will be on the other stream. Only time will tell whether or not this format will ultimately survive on the Internet. But in the meantime, it's good to be back! :) BTW, an ALL NEW Chilled Excursions with Angelica airs tonight at 11:00PM Eastern. Hope you can join us!

Sorry in being late to reply. I thought you were doing pretty good with the new music, but been listening a lot lately and it still sounds awesome. Just keep the wav flowing no matter what. :)

Will do, Jazz_Kat! No worries. It was worth a shot, but my base listeners know what they like, and they made that patently evident to me. ;) It was a valuable lesson, one that I have preached time and time again. Be good to your base, and they'll be good to you. Turn your back on them, and they'll turn their backs on you.

I know you guys have missed the Future Of Jazz With Chris, and I have had to run some encores while Chris gets settled in with his new terrestrial radio station in Nashville. Good news!! I have a brand new show this week, so please join us at a brand new air time of 12:00PM Eastern. I am sampling the show as I type, and the FOJ has got some great tunes queued up...some stuff you have heard on The .wav, and some stuff you haven't heard. Great to have the FOJ back on Sundays! :)

Well, gang. My stream server has been down for several hours, so I guess it's no better time than the present to tell everyone that I am saying goodbye, at least for now. This is a VERY difficult decision for me, but the right one at this time. Working full time, raising two young children and all that goes with it is quite the handful, too much so to handle the added pressure of keeping the station current, tight, and where I want it to be. You guys deserve better. I hope over the last 40 months I have been able to give you all a place you could call "home" as far as this genre goes. I want you to know that I have enjoyed every minute of it, and will cherish the lasting relationships I have developed here on this board and privately. But unfortunately, I just don't have the time, money, or passion to continue to expend the effort to keep a 24/7 operation tight and current. I am at peace with what "The .wav" stood for and what it became, but it is time to move on and enjoy others' programming for a change. :D Who knows? Maybe I can become one of those guys who produces a two-hour show each week and leaves it to some other poor sap to handle the remaining 166 hours each week. ;D And if I get the itch down the road to turn the lights back on, you guys will be the first to know. But I won't lie to you, gang. I'm going to miss it. :-[

Peace,

Chris

One thing I want to add, guys, is that it is VERY likely (I'd say a 90% chance) I will be launching another hobby stream sometime within the next month. But it will be much easier to manage, since there will no longer be tremendous pressure to stay current, pay streaming and royalties fees separately, etc. Plus, it means I can keep my traditional Christmas music program going, which I can tell you I would have missed terribly. Not 100% sure of what the theme of the station is going to be, but it will reflect my passion for the music that has inspired me one way or another over the last 35-40 years of my life. But I do plan on doing at least a Smooth Jazz Saturday Night program of my own, or even Smooth Jazz weekends, so I'll keep you posted! I love the music too much to go cold turkey. :D

Don't mean to cry wolf, but two longtime listeners and RI friends have graciously offered to pitch in and help keep the station on the air! I explained to these gentlemen that the biggest challenge for me has been keeping up with new music service and keeping the station current. Thankfully, they have agreed to help me with this, so "The .wav" lives on. I must say I was very conflicted about the decision, so I am grateful that I can keep bringing you the music with a little help from my friends!!!! :)

WoooHooo!!!! Honestly, if you would have just keep everything like it is now, I wouldn't have minded. But I also understand about adding new music. I don't know how you do your adds, but as long as you DONT look at music charts and just use your instincts!!!!

I must have miss this post. I'm sorry to hear that you have to step away. The Wav is an awesome station. But it is great to have such great friends to help you keep it going. 8)

Greetings! This morning I have been listening for about two hours from 1100 to 1300 eastern, and y'all are doing a wonderful job with the Format! Good flow, nice melodies, compelling with good energy but not too "out there". Well done.

Appreciate the kind words, ABQRADIO. With both of us being huge fans of Steve Hibbard, it means a lot that we're hitting the spot with true NAC fans. Thanks for listening and riding The .wav! ;D

OK, a brief but bizarre update for TuneIn mobile app listeners. Since this past Saturday, you have heard Christmas music, 70s, 80s, 90s, basically EVERYTHING but my station. I have been in regular contact with the TuneIn folks advising them of this. They apologized and claimed to have resolved it. But sure enough, I heard Papa Don't Preach by Madonna this morning at 8:00AM EST, then a tag "The Classic Hits Station." Not sure if it is the "Ghosts In The Machine" (80s pun), or there are nefarious intentions afoot (a stream hack and redirect) by someone trying to force a flip of another Smooth Jazz station. But I can assure you wavjazz.net is STILL on the air and STILL playing the music you are used to hearing. Hopefully the quirky TuneIn issue will get resolved at some point today. Suffice it to say, I am trying to get to the bottom of it. It makes no sense to me. Peace.

Just wanted to say the wav have been playing some great Christmas music this evening. Good listening! 8)
