The WAVE Goes Christmas

KTWV went to Chistmas at 5pm today. Mike Sakellarides proclaimed the WAVE to be Southern California's newest Lite Christmas Station. Don't know if that's the positioner they're using or just his line, but they've beaten KOST to the punch. Now we have to wait and see whether it will help the WAVE and hurt KOST or not.

Very smart move. Most towns have 2 choices for holiday music. I figured KTWV would pull in bigger numbers while KOST flips to holiday music. KTWV would serve as a alternative for those who dont wanna sit up and listen to 5 verisons of Jingle Bells. Still something refreshing to hear on the radio. They are defently going after KOST.

The difference being that KTWV is playing Christmas songs from artist's like Kenny G. It would seem that they're trying to keep some core artists in the mix. I agree, good move, but it remains to be seen if they can put a dent in KOST. I imagine that KOST may move up their X-mas start time now.

Too early! Black Friday should be a traditional start for radio.

Most stations that flip early to holiday music usually do good in PPM ratings. Hopefully Jhani Kaye will have a expanded playlist. This is the first time KTWV played Christmas music non stop. Im sure Jhani is using some of the music logs from KRTH.

Didn't sound like anything that KRTH did a few years back. It seemed to reflect the regular playlist with songs from Wave-like artists in the mix as well as Christmas standards.

not happening. like using a manual from a Chevy to tune up your Ford. your mileage may vary.

Jhani Kaye is a smart programmer, period. And he knows the legacy of Christmas programming better than any PD in LA. The All-Christmas music on KTWV should be eminently more listenable than the standard fare of KOST who likely didn't see this move coming. Oops.

KOST seems to be ignoring it all, still touting the coming change to Christmas. It was going to be this week anyway, but I'm sure they didn't see the WAVE coming. The smart thing to do would have been for KOST to be ready to go at a moments notice and to go Christmas as soon as they found out about the WAVE.

What I like is that there is actually variety with what the WAVE is playing with their Christmas music ... KOSt hasn't changed their Christmas playlog much ...

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out ...

Hell is KOST even live on the weekends anymore? All I hear is Christine mostly during the day.

KOST's Christmas playlist took a turn for the worse about 3 years ago. That's when CC Corporate took control. The rotations were shortened to mind numbingly quick turnarounds and the songs they were rotating every 3 hours were 50 and 60 year old standards. Sadly, their numbers have been good, so KOST is playing the same playlist as every other CC station at almost the exact same time again because they feel it worked.

Interesting to see a Smooth Jazz/AC station go all-christmas, it dosen't happen often. Come Dec. 26th, what do you think will happen? I'm thinking...

1. Regular format
2. KNX 94.7 and 1070 NewsRadio...or
3. KFWB News/Talk 94.7

As many X-Mas stations switch to a completely different format on 12/26...a KFWB or KNX simulcast may be in the works soon...

Technically, KFWB is not owned by CBS now.

The only way I see a format change at the Wave is if they've fired the jocks--however, considering that the jocks are still there and they've made pains to emphasize that they're playing music by some of their core artists during all-Christmas, I have the feeling that the Wave will be back to normal on Dec. 26.

Its been in the works for over a year but I actually like their musical sound now. It took a while to grow on me. The way Jhani programs the Wave and seeing its numbers increase makes me believe the format can work. Since KHHT doesnt play new music and KJLH is lost The Wave format suits me fine. I seriously doubt KNX will move to 94.7 but AC could be in the works.
