The Wave is Back!!!!

Dan Deely? Talk about bringing back an old fossil. Who is next? Matt the Cat?

Seriously.

What do you expect for a format like this? Nothing but a bunch of twenty-somethings fresh out of college? Next thing, you would all gripe about it being nothing but an output for OCB flunkies because Thom Mandel and Nick Anthony are too damn cheap to hire any "name" talent. They hire the "name" talent, and you all call it a house of retreads.

It's funny for me to read the utter irrationality behind all this grousing. You're ticked off if it's all veteran announcers, you're ticked off if it's no one you know, and you're ticked off if it's a mixture of new and old.

And I betcha that NONE of you will listen, or even thought of planning to listen, to The Wave. ;D

Well, if I'm in the dentist office about to have a drill put in my mouth, what would I rather be listening to, Kenny G. or Springsteen?

The fact that very few terrestrial radio stations in the US target younger, male-dominated rock formats is telling.

It's a shame for those who love those genres and various niches...but, at least you can go to the internet, your phones, MP3 players, or various computer music players.

Radio is like the railroad. Railroads once used to be the prefered method to haul freight. Then came the automobile. Like the railroad, radio will still be around, just used less.

When radio drops the CHR stations, then we know they don't care about the future generations using radio.

That 18-24 male cell is always problematic in regard to sample size. It is this way
with diaries and PPM. Thats just another reason why formats for this demo are not in abundance.

Thats funny. My dentist uses television screens on the ceiling. I usually opt for CNN! :D I hadn't thought of it, but dentists using TV is probably why the Smooth Jazz format is disappearing. ;D

If a person could own radio stations with formats that make lots of money reaching big audiences, or run much less successful formats with a lot smaller audiences who have much less money to spend....and your decision was strictly a business decision...what would you do?

I'd guess you'd go with the formats to the best of your knowledge and research you see are the most profitable, and worry about your radio station's future audience in the years down the road.

Is that shortsighted? Sure. No argument there. But, that's how most businesses are run in 2011. Radio stations too.

I honestly am sick and tired of hearing people say "radio is dead." To you, radio is dead because your fancy format is going away and you want to kick it in the teeth. STOP!

Bob Pittman, love him or hate him said what is going to kill radio is people IN radio badmouthing the industry. He's right! If we keep dogging our own business we will end up putting the nail in our own coffin.

Since 1970, radio usage has INCREASED. Today, radio is the MOST used medium out of all media.

Answer me this: Which listeners tune into the same station during all their waking hours?

Even when WMMS was in their heyday, not one single person tuned into 100.7 24/7. Nowadays listenership is more fragmented.
Talk radio will be big in 2012 simply because of the upcoming elections.

And yes, classic rock is on the decline because of the fact the baby boomer generation is aging rapidly. I tip my hat to those at ELBC for going out on a limb and trying the AAA format though things were mismanaged.

RCRG has a chance to take a previously abandoned format and do something with it. If they fail, it won't be from a lack of trying. And they do respond to listener feedback.

For some people, watching CNN is equivalent to listening to enduring a Kenny G solo. :p ;)

Sorry I mentioned CNN! :D

Lol. For a second, I thought I found the only person who bothers to watch Piers Morgan. :p

Just give me the 24/7 rolling news wheel on CNN Headline News back, and all will be well.
