Dan Deely? ;D The endless parade of Jurassic Radio jocks continue in Cleveland Radio. So much for anything new or different here.
Jurassic my foot. Dan is one of the best radio personality Cleveland's ever had. He's someone who deserves to come back to Cleveland radio full-time, and has been reduced to a Sunday afternoon shift and fill-in shift at WDOK for over three years since CBS made those cuts. I wish him nothing but the best. Anything he touches, turns to gold.
The other jocks are good too, with Bobby coming back to radio after an 11-year hiatus since he left WDOK for the east coast. Lynn will technically new to Cleveland since there are those who've never heard of her. She's more well-known to Akron-area listeners dating back to WKDD and The Summit. I assume she'll continue at WQMX.
Just because these are familiar voices, does not mean they should be dismissed. They'll fit in well with The Wave, and I think they'll also help put a huge dent on WDOK.

I never said he should be dismissed. I am I guess the only person on this Cleveland message board that is tired of hearing the same names over and over and over ad nauseum. Again I have a lot of respect for many of these people but their time has gone. Yes Dan Deely is a familiar name but again his time has past.

You do have a point that there should be more newer voices in town, but that is up to those in charge.

I want to see new talent get a fair shot in this town. Consistently giving on air slots to personalities that were popular in the mid to late 1980s and early 1990s is not bringing any new listeners to stations. Again, everyone's time passes at one point or another in any field. Dan Deely is not going to put the WAVE at #1 in the morning. This town needs new voices and new personalities. Far too many air personalities are getting recycled over and over with no new talent to replace them. I give Q104 credit in that they at least go for new (to the area) talent.
Okay, so Lynn Kelly is going to be on the Wave, probably will keep her shift at WQMX and remain as the voice of Acme Fresh Markets as well as Laria Chevrolet. Maybe she is spreading herself a bit thin. And also since McFly is leaving WQMX at the end of January, I should update my resume, get an audition recording together and offer my services to Sue Wilson as a part time personality.
I mean what the heck? Though I'm in my mid fifties, I would be a fresh voice. Make some of you somewhat happy.

I'll bet if you asked 100 people why they listened to most stations that are music-intensive radio stations they'd say the music 80 to 90 of 100 times...maybe more.
I seriously doubt anybody would say..."well, the music's not that important...and I'm really upset I never hear any new personalities on the radio".
Veteran radio people on music-intensive formats realize they are hosts....offering a bit of humanity, even some full-service elements if in drive times, but that music is the main reason people listen.

As far as WIXY applying for weekends at WQMX go for it. I would much rather hear you on WQMX than say Rick Allen who has been on every radio station in Cleveland Akron and Canton 10 times over. Those weekend slots used to go too people wanting to get a shot in the business. They now go to people trying to hang on instead. We get the Rick Allen, Dan Deely and Bob McKays of the world instead of a person out of broadcasting school or college learning the trade and hopefully improving. When John Gorman took over WMMS the second time around he knew that he had to get an influx of fresh talent in this market. How can it be WMMS the next Generation if you have Jeff/Flash, Matt the Cat, Denny Sanders as your main hosts? Some of you on here want to hang on to your youth which is admirable but in order for radio to survive you have to give way to the next generation at some point

I'm afraid you're correct. V107.3 failed for many reasons. The main one being the recycling of the "has beens" and the lack of "in the now" knowledge. Hell, they launched under a name that they didn't bother to research for copyright reasons (Boom) while also ripping of the color scheme of Google.
This was a "friends" affair from launch, therefor dooming. I'm sure they thought they were hitting gold, which they would have been, had it been 20 years earlier. Don't you realize that most of the popular and successful Cleveland radio shows are hosted by people that AREN'T from Cleveland.
V107.3 had ONE chance to live. Upon knowing that 92.3 was flipping, which was publicly announced about 2-3 weeks before it actually did, 107.3 should have grabbed the format. With a little research (listening to 92.3), they would have known what clients to sell to, and if they had "young blood" sales execs, persuading them to switch over would have been cake. Then, blow out the old folks and hire a new generation of stars.
Now, they are switching back to a format that literally targets the dying. another 5-10 years, and their demo will not exist. Such is the fate of WDOK.
I love how all these so-called "experts" think its so easy..Just hand airshifts on a major market station to young, untried jocks..The money will come rolling in..and throw people with any age on them under the bus as it were..The people hired at the Wave are known quantities..That the LISTENERS like..They are programming radio for listeners, not for a young jock's playground..Whatever happened to learning radio at the small station levels like Sandusky, Dover, Lima, etc..People dont want to work at those markets because they're "too small"

A station like WNWV, which is basically rebooting back to what they were pre-Boom!, needs veteran personnel to reconnect with their intended demos. That's why Mark Ribbins is back, and that's why they also signed Bobby Thomas, whose on-air delivery is not dissimilar to former Wave morning host Tom Murphy.
If it was nothing but college students or OCB graduates hosting airshifts instead, the same level of complaining would be heard on the opposite side of the spectrum. People are going to complain, no matter what.

Think in terms of Major League Baseball. Where do players start? In the farm system. They play for the AA and AAA clubs and if they shine there, they'll rise to the bigs. Hire someone who has a successful track record in Des Moines or Omaha or Roanoke and see if they have what it takes to make themselves a star player with the big boys.
I think we all agree this is where V107.3 went wrong. I do have to agree with the new Smooth AC hiring the veterans though. A station that targets 45+ should have familiar names that people remember from 'the old days'. If this format is successful, I agree it will no longer be viable in a few years.
