Wease is back on the air at WCMF after undergoing treatment for his sinus cancer in New York City. He's a bit thinner than before but his spirits seem high. He's now waiting for word on whether the treatments worked. All of us in Rochester, and I'm sure his fans in Buffalo, wish Wease the best and that he will recover fully.

He's been sounding good, just like his old self, all week long. If what we're hearing on the air is indicative of how he's doing overall, you've got to believe Wease is back and he'll be going strong...which is the best news for everyone.
Stay well, Wease...everyone in and out of the business in upstate NY is glad to have you back, and we're all pulling for you!

He might end up back on there eventually, given that Jack isn't exactly setting the world on fire outside of western Canada and the southern US. And in New York, listeners are ready to set fire to Jack. Early signs are it's getting an outright hostile reception in NYC, where the format killed a beloved oldies station and has been meeting with angry rejection that's reverberating all through the trade papers and all over the country, reportedly even shocking the CEO of parent Viacom. No one downstate can remember any station format change greeted with such widespread and universal hostility. Hatred is not too strong a word, based on public reaction reported so far.

Early reports are, some advertisers down there are falling away, and others plan to as soon as their contracts allow. Jack is looking like a format flavor of the month, and people in a lot of North America seem not to have acquired the taste. I have to wonder if its variants like Rochester's "Fickle" will do much better. After a little initial sampling, the playlist on "Fickle" sounds more tightened, most of the songs seem to be repeating more often than you'd expect, and the mix of songs and genres is just too awkward to be listenable. Imagine an iPod programmed by a bipolar disorder patient who's gone off his meds and you have the idea of how it sounds most of the day. The morning show remains OK because it's got live personalities and info, there's real value added and it doesn't stand on the music alone...but I can't see how this format succeeds unless they do that the rest of the day. And failure to do that in any daypart in Buffalo and NYC is going to doom the format to shares down in the 1s or worse.

What will be the next format for WBUF come the end of 2006? That may depend on who owns the station then. Infinity is reportedly planning on dumping some or all of its Buffalo properties, and it's anyone's guess what the next owner might do with a good Class C-1 FM signal. But what's left? Buffalo has stations making decent livings, or better, playing the hits (Kiss 98.5), hot AC (Star 102), active rock (Edge 103.3), classic rock (97 Rock), modern country (WYRK), urban contemp (WBLK), oldies and classic hits (WHTT), 'real oldies' ('KB 1520), R&B gold (WWWS 1400), pop standards (WECK), classical (WNED-FM) and eclectic throwback progressive rock ('The Lake' 107.7), not to mention spoken word formats on the AM band including sports (WGR), issue talk (WBEN) and news (WNED). What the hell do you do with 92.9 that someone hasn't already done elsewhere? What they're doing now is going to crater after Stern leaves at the end of the year, so they'd better have an answer fast, or succeed in dumping it into some other owner's lap.

And many of us outside the upstate NY area, as well.

Thanks for the good word.

Did you have a specific board poster in mind when you came up with this gem?

Anyway, I agree with some posters who have opined that Jack is going to garner an audience and likely will be an intitial success.

But as you note, what happens next?

The bloom always comes off the rose, no matter what format. After the first six months of success, it takes an investment in local air personalities to make a station work in the long run. Good air personalities are the mortar that holds the bricks in place.

Wease however, isn't a good fit for Jack.

That said, I join the many well-wishers who hope he conquers his cancer and returns to good health and success.

I see (and hear) any number of good music-intensive jocks sliding into the Jack morning show, possibly even "The Godfather" who now works middays at WJYE. At the very least, he's no stranger to 92.9 and he knows how to run the board. Star's Roger Christian also would be an outstanding morning guy on Jack.

Initially, I see Jack hurting Star 102.5, 97 Rock and WHTT to an extent. How much of a hurt is open to conjecture. Fortunately for those stations, they have good programming personnel and air personalities in place.</font>

No, it's not what you think. ;-) It just reflects my impression of what I'm hearing.

Mmmm, I dunno. I don't see it doing any better than its predecessors. People who want variety in music get it presented much better from The Lake. People who like classic hits get it truly well presented from WHTT, people who like current and recurrent adult hits get a good presentation from Star 102.5, and people who like classic rock get it well done from 97 Rock. So, there's no reason to try a poorly presented mishmosh of all of those stations without any value added. I've heard it. It just doesn't get it done.

> But as you note, what happens next?

It won't be pretty. I underestimated The Lake, simply because it grew, it hit its stride and started doing what it needed to do---recreate the feel of what the old WPHD used to be 30 years ago. I see no growth potential at all for Infinity's take on Jack. It isn't the same station as the Toronto Jack, and never will be. They don't do the things that need to be done to make it grow in any of the markets where they use it.

Six months of success ain't gonna happen.

> Wease however, isn't a good fit for Jack.

He won't have to be, because if he's heard again in Buffalo, it'll be on the NEXT format on 92.9, whether it's classic rock, hot talk, or a combination of the two.

If they get that far, and staff every daypart with solid talent, they might have a chance. But that's not what most Jack stations have done so far, at least south of the border.

I don't think any of those stations have much to worry about.
