The Weather Channel "Local on the 8s" Music

For a couple decades now, I have immensely enjoyed the contemporary jazz selections for The Weather Channel's "Local on the 8s" segment, dating back to when The Rippingtons' cover of "Let's Stay Together" and Max Groove's "Fiesta Sol" were fixtures on the station. But I have been equally frustrated that you could not retrieve the artist/track data for the cuts they rolled out. But thankfully, those days are over. I just happened to do a Google for "Weather Channel Music," and much to my surprise, the number one hit was from the Weather Channel page itself. At first I thought it was a link for their CD compilations, but they are now listing exactly what they are playing monthly for their "Local on the 8s" segment!!! (and posted archives dating back to November 2008) :)

I thought I'd share it with everyone here. This is a great move by the Weather Channel. Whoever has been programming their music over the years needs to be commended. They have introduced me to a lot of great music!!!

Wow, talk about good music! I can understand why they are number one on the album chart Now I'm going to be up half night trying to download these tracks, lol. I'm loving the Russ Freeman/Rippingtons track "Brave New World", Ryan Farish "Oasis" , and Chris Geith's "Restless Heart". Thanks for the link Chris and for playing some of these great tracks (as well as many others) on your station, "The .wav"! :)

Great find Chris!!

2 of my all-time favs were first heard on The Weather Channel...in fact, ironically/coincidentally, the only place I could find a free extended version of the first song listed below is a Youtube video of TWC's "Local on the 8s" broadcast of the song (click on the link to listen)... :D

On the Upside - Steve Oliver - One Night Live

At The Modern - Joyce Cooling - Revolving Door

Of course, the only way I was able to ID the songs after I heard them first on TWC was to hear them soon after on Jones!! :(

And, thanks to "The .wav" , these and many other favorites of mine can continue to be heard daily!! ;)

About 7 years ago, I remember the Atlanta paper ran a big article on *the* guy who picked the music at TWC.
Tried to Google up the article but cannot find it.

At the time, they were also playing some AOR and eclectic stuff, too, like Derek and the Dominos, Santana and Phish.

Joe

FYI, Youtube's "Localonthe8s" has done an outstanding job of posting all the TWC "Local on the 8s" w/song title & artist at the following...he has even dubbed some of his own songs into the videos (called Tests)..

DD, this is fantastic!!! If you TWC fans haven't checked this YouTube link out yet, you owe it to yourselves to!!! The sound quality is outstanding (as is the video quality). Let's hope the guy keeps this up. Curious as to whether he has converted over some of the classic stuff from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Nice catch, DD!!! :)

Hey Joe. A keyboardist whose music is featured heavily on TWC (and makes an appearance on TWC's CDs) reached out to me a couple of weeks ago and we had a nice chat about their excellent programming, past and present. He told me that TWC plans on incorporating more of that eclectic sound you speak of, but that his music will still be featured (and rightfully so...his stuff has a great vibe!!!)

Peace,

Chris
