The Weather Channel

Well, the NBC-mandated budget cuts are on:

NBC Fires Weather Channel Environmental Unit
Some on-camera meteorologists also let go
*A very cold evening: PM forecast update*

NBC Universal made the first of potentially several rounds of staffing cuts at The Weather Channel (TWC) on Wednesday, axing the entire staff of the "Forecast Earth" environmental program during the middle of NBC's "Green Week", as well as several on-camera meteorologists. The layoffs totaled about 10 percent of the workforce, and are the first major changes made since NBC completed its purchase of the venerable weather network in September.

The layoffs affected about 80 people, but left the long-term leadership of the network unclear, according to a source who requested anonymity due to the continuing uncertainty at the station.

Among the meteorologists who was let go was Dave Schwartz, a Weather Channel veteran and a viewer staple due to his lively on camera presentations. USA Today reported that meteorologists Cheryl Lemke and Eboni Deon were also let go.

The timing of the Forecast Earth cancellation was ironic, since it came in the middle of NBC's "Green is Universal" week, during which the network has been touting its environmental coverage across all of its platforms. Forecast Earth normally aired on weekends, but its presumed last episode was shown on a weekday due to the environmentally-oriented week.

Forecast Earth was hosted by former CNN anchor Natalie Allen, with contributions from climate expert Heidi Cullen. It was the sole program on TWC that focused on global climate change, which raises the question of whether the station will still report on the subject. Cullen's future role at the network is not known.

Sorry to hear about Dave Schwartz and Cheryl Lemke, both seemed to be real class acts. Eboni Deon never really impressed me, but perhaps she can get a small-market gig somewhere. I wish the very best of luck to all three of them.

With regard to Cullen's future, that's one layoff that would be a good strategic move for NBC-U. Get TWC out of the business of politics and back into weather. Keep it simple, stupid! They have enough political discourse on their news channels without mucking up weather with it.

Chopping Forecast Earth is a good start. Of course, doing it in the middle of "Green Week" is beyond ironic.... ::)

Latest word floating around has TWC shutting down on Christmas Day (if there is no major weather event) - 24+ hours of repeats of long-form programming.

Let's face it folks, the only green NBC is concerned with are little 6 inch pieces of paper with numbers and pictures of dead presidents!

Check out your HD subchannels for Accuweather. KCAU/9 in Sioux City IA has been running this for a couple of months. It doesn't look nearly as good as TWC, but it's all weather. No documentaries or global warming coverage, just local/area weather forecasts, current conditions, and brief national and local summaries 24/7.

And a dead treasury secretary. The next time you view or hold a $10 bill will remind you of that.

I couldn't have said that one better myself. I knew something like this was eventually going to happen when Landmark, a private company, sold TWC to NBC, a public company. For some reason, they now think that firing people will endure them to the shareholders. When just the opposite is happening.

Honestly, what's so POLITICAL about global climate change? ::) ::) ::)

Hank Paulsen has his face on a bill? At the rate he's going, it will be on the new $3 bill!

Don't forget--there's also a dead scientist pictured on one of them........

(Hint: he invented bi-focal glasses and flew a kite in a lightning storm.)

"Latest word floating around has TWC shutting down on Christmas Day (if there is no major weather event) - 24+ hours of repeats of long-form programming."

I hadn't heard about Weather Channel shutting down.....I *had* read about NBC planning to junk Weather Plus+ by the end of this year and (probably only in some areas, I imagine) replacing it with programming from The Weather Channel. I don't know what KGW will end up doing, tho.

"NBC announced on October 7, 2008 that Weather Plus would be phased out by the end of the year, after the NBC affiliates expressed a desire to shut the service down. Though NBC cited its purchase of The Weather Channel as a factor in the shutdown, it has been stated that the closure would have happened even if the acquisition had not happened.

According to NBC, Weather Plus will begin its phase-out late November, with its closure date set for December 1, 2008."

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_Weather_Plus and it's been mentioned on this board a couple of times as well.....

First of all, "global climate change" is a term that is meaningless nonsense. The climate is in a constant state of change on this planet and always has been. NO, that's the new moniker for "global warming" which (yes indeed) pertains to not just an alleged phenomenon, but to a political movement as well.

If you honestly want to know, think about the concept that there is actually a lot of skepticism developing about this issue among scientific circles. The recent warming has occurred over the past 10 years has now receded somewhat and been replaced by cooler global temperatures. Hence the name change.

Now that you insisted on getting me going, I guess it can be summed up why it's POLITICAL as follows:

1) The political movement of the "global warming" believers manifested itself in the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement which would allow China, India and others to continue to increase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while the US and other industrialized western countries would be cut back. This comes at a tremendous economic cost to those countries (if implemented) as there's not yet a plausible alternative to the use of fossil fuels as a replacement source of energy to fuel industry. However, in the end the net effect would be to simply redistribute wealth to China and India (to a lesser extent) and away from the U.S. and Europe while (and here's the kicker) still allowing a global increase in GHG emissions. Only it's a different bunch doing the emitting. If you truly believe that the planet has a fever, than this would not be the way to go now would it?

2) The data are not irrefutable. There are a lot of factors to be considered, including urban sprawl, placement of weather monitoring stations and other intangibles that may have contributed to the alleged 0.6 degree C raise in global temperature between 1978 and 2005. Interestingly enough, even NASA has admitted errors and admits that the temperature hasn't risen significantly since 1998. When graphically reviewed and compared with solar output, one can see more of a correlation between these factors than between temperature and CO2 output. In other words, it's not all that clear what has caused the warming. Not nearly as clear as the GW advocates would make it seem. This has been buried below the headlines for political reasons.

3) Those who question this GW dogma are labeled by others in the scientific community as "deniers" and ostracized. Kind of like what happened to the likes of Copernicus and Galileo back in the middle ages. Why? Because too many of these academics garner a paycheck from grants that are based on the whole GW concept. That's where the Benjamins come in to play. But there are more reasons.

4) Yes, CO2 is a greenhouse gas. No argument there. And, I'll even go so far as to say that it's likely that people have warmed the earth a little. But, the debate is - or should be - how much? I maintain that the computer models vastly overestimate the effect and that the sun has much more of an effect on our climate. And, no one can prove that to be incorrect. About the models that melt the polar ice caps and kill us all....well they are an example of garbage in, garbage out. Don't take them seriously. They're just guessing at this point. But they are making everyone think that it's what's going to happen tomorrow even when they know it's not really so. Why do this? Well....

5) OK here's the #1 reason it's POLITICAL...... Because advocates of "global warming theory" are political leftists who despise capitalism and have socialist/Marxist leanings. They hate industry, they hate America and they hate you for having a nice car and they blame all of us for allegedly destroying the environment. Ironic because communists have done more environmental damage than any other type of government and the environment in a place like the US is clean when compared with other countries. But, to these guys, anything that is useful to tear down the current societal order is all the better for them and this particular movement fits the bill nicely. When raw data disagrees with the theory, it is tossed aside as if it were rubbish. Like how Mars and Venus and Jupiter have warmed at the same rate as the Earth since 1978.....that was dismissed as mere coincidence by otherwise prestigious scientists!

So, to sum up, it's been political since day one. The "climate change" mantra has only been around since the warming tailed off to prevent there from being any dissent as temperatures have cooled a bit. No, we can't have people laughing at the likes of Al Gore and his fans at universities - so now we use terms like "fluctuation." Guess what? Our temperatures have ALWAYS fluctuated! A load of bull is what that is.

If you have to ask that question, and are really interested in an answer to it - do yourself a favor and start seeking out this info on the internet. There are tons of articles on all sides of the issue. But make no mistake: the whole concept is debatable and should be debated. Not just fed to us by edict.

Sorry I went long and stepped into the hard break. But clearly this needs to be explained. And it's also why I'd like to see Heidi Cullen banished to teaching a remedial weather watcher's course in some junior college classroom (see reason #3).

I'm not looking to offend anyone, of course in this day and age, someone's always gonna be mad about something. I know the environment is important, all I'm saying is if people want to discuss the environment then seek out a greenpeace volunteer, they should not be allowed to be up in your face forcing it on you. So I guess in answer to your question, I'd rather you quote these comments rather than my original post.

Of course, it's ironic that the man whose face is on those "Benjamins" is a freethinker:

I wonder what John Coleman, the former meterologist on ABC's "Good Morning
America" and "original" creator of "The Weather Channel" think of all the change
that has taken place in the last several years?
As for myself, they should stick to what this cable network was created for, the
political statement new owners "NBC Universal" is trying to sent is that "global
warming" is having a profound impact on our planet, i beg to differ.

His most recent public comments on the matter implied a great deal of displeasure with TWC's recent programming and political choices. This was last year, IIRC.
