The "What Does CC Do With 100.3" Thread

I kicked some of this around on the Mighty Blog(tm) yesterday, but I'd like some outside specuiation and discussion.

Clear Channel is filing to buy W262BN/100.3 Lorain, the translator Radio One tried to buy (and move to a new CP location in North Ridgeville, with COL of Cleveland).

Let's say you have a 250 watt signal fairly high up out of Parma on one of your existing FM sticks...if you're at Oak Tree, what do you do with it?

Probably WTAM since their FM properties don't need a secondary signal. Are they going to point it towards Lake Erie? WNIR 100.1 can be heard in parts of Cleveland. When I've visited Cleveland, I could pick WNIR at Hopkins Airport, so I would think 100.3 would cause interference to WNIR.

Or, maybe CC bought it to prevent Salem's WHK or Good Karma's WKNR from getting an FM signal for night time coverage.

I'm told that WNIR's 60 dBu contour "barely touches" Cuyahoga County, and that CC could mount this thing in Parma and point it north, directionally, to deal with that issue.

Some others are speculating about some sort of urban format...the goal, to knock a couple of shares off either WZAK or WENZ, depending on how young skewing the format is. That'd help CC's stations, share/rank-wise.

WKNR doesn't need JUST a translator... they need a full-market FM signal, and bad.

Yes, their 50kW signal goes all the way to Detroit and all that... but the night pattern is putrid (heck, you can't pick it up west of Crocker Park, let alone most of Lorain County!). That alone is an automatic non-starter for the Quixotic dreams of Good Karma ever mounting a challenge to get serious PBP (assuming Craig ever had such dreams).

Good Karma would have to have an FM signal to poach any of the major league sports rights from CC, but they'd also need a crowbar to get those rights out of Oak Tree. :)

The signal wouldn't have to be their own. They could pair up with another non-owned FM to go for the Browns (perhaps Radio One's WZAK?, CBS would seem to be a non-starter due to Craig's family history). No music FM would pre-empt regular programming for Indians or even the Cavs, but any would want the Browns.

Again, all academic. CC signs long-term rights deals, and each team is (IIRC) in the middle of one.

Put the transmitter halfway between Lorain and Cleveland west side, and go Spanish. Probably 75,000 Spanish speaking in Western Cuyahoga and Lorain counties combined with virtually no service. Run from a cheap network, with maybe a live morning show.

Most interesting post of the thread, and they could run it from one of the HD2s as mentioned here.

The service for that part of the market is poor...at last check, far Lorain rimshot non-comm WNZN/89.1 still "selling" (underwriting) the Hispanic advertisers as far east as Lakewood. And that population may be growing enough for a commercial operator to provide limited service (and not HD2-only, like WNCX did for a while).

They could pair it with a translator out in Painesville/Lake County, and goodness knows CC has Spanish-language networks to choose from.

Does it happen? I don't know if I'm willing to bet on it...but...interesting idea.

I am loving the option of half the Lake Erie Monsters Hockey games on WHKW-1220-Just because of being able to hear some of the games on the radio in Canton..WKNR-850 at night-Forget about it..

Akron's east side is pretty bad too, the signal is almost nonexistent during the day in the Kent area. I've wondered why WKNR bothers with local programming after sunset since the signal is anemic in most of the market. Too bad they can't get back on 1220, that's not a terrific signal by any means but at least it's audible.

1220 has its problems, too.

Due to its night directional signal, 1220 is a rumor in much of Medina County, a fast-growing area that is inside the Cleveland market proper. The signal literally disappears around the Summit-Medina County line heading towards Medina.

There's really only one full AM signal in the market, with no deficiencies...of course, it's WTAM/1100.
