The Winter Of Legends

12+ ... 4.6 up from a 2.9!

That should shut everyone up for awhile.

There's the 12+ number again

Legends tops The Fox, CMF, The Drive and others at 4.6 12+!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah baby. That's what I'm talin' about!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats to ALL of my co-workers at LEGENDS 102.7FM.........

There you go! Two years ago, WHTT-FM was high on the horse and now, look at the ratings. Will anyone around Buffalo Niagara get the hint and give us some hope for radio again?

:(
Back in the day, this would have been an expected response to a book. However, under prevailing conditions, I would consider this rather ruthless. In fact, I would consider it fodder for a unification. While the industry as a whole needs some kind of injection of life to survive, it would seem that reaming on your ally is rather heartless. The bigger picture suggests that you're not competing with each other, but with the listenership- TV, satellite, etc. Wouldn't it be more prudent to swing the pendulum and start throwing CUDOS out to the other players for what was accomplished...rather than...well this type of comment? These boards consists of passionate posters...and I challenge any to disagree that now isn't a bad time to solidify RADIO as whole to reinforce it as a medium..rather than play ratings against each other (verbally at least). Just a thought.
(Disclaimer - I understand the corporate, economic & ratings influence on individual station based attitudes)

I doubt it... opinionated people are rarely silent. Besides, what fun would the message boards be if there wasn't a little good-natured discussion going on?

Giardina? Are you kidding me? Get your head out of the sand!

I think WLGZ is perfectly aware of that fact that they should have local news- It's important for that format... but if Joe Centani (a weekender) was supposedly cut loose due to budget concerns, how do you expect them to afford to provide a credible news product?

Have you even witnessed the cuts recently at Entercom, Cumulus & Clear Channel... CC's 590 "layoffs" on Tuesday are closer to 1,000 firings, AND they've quit matching 401k's. Cumulus has just mandated non-paid vacations (5 days per quarter) and continue to fire airtalents & programmers. Entercom dropped 401k matching a few months back, and this week laid off more airstaff in a handful of markets. This weekend, I'll be surprised if "repeater radio" doesn't pop up locally, at least on Kiss & Fox. I know the weekenders have been cut in my market, at stations with far superior numbers than those sticks in Rochester.

Yet, checking the Legends website, they still have a decent compliment of weekenders to deliver immediacy & locality... and it looks like they have local bodies from 7-midnight weekdays. That's a feat in this climate. And yet you bring up news?

Holy crap, am I sick of armchair quarterbacks & used to be's with zero programming experience. I LOVE when constructive criticism & meaningful discussions take place in this forum. But geez, applaud stations for a good book when applicable, and don't post comments not grounded in the realities of 2009.

Unbelievable... really unbelievible.

In defense of Giardina, with whom I have sometimes tangled, I interpret his post as saying local news in morning drive might have increased the station's performance. That having been said, Mike makes a legitimate point. Bodies are being thrown from the crazy train that radio has become and Legends still has live personalities in most dayparts. Give 'em some love. BufFlyGuy makes another good point about WHTT doing better two years ago. OMG, this is uncharacteristically diplomatic of me. I'm done here.

Why to you think WHAM has such a huge audience for morning drive? One of the reasons is that they offer local news.

My comment wasn't a slam against Legends increase in the winter book ( 12+) but to say that considering their format goes after the same audience that listens to WHAM, it wouldn't have hurt Legends to provide their listeners with morning news as well. It's called "thinking out of the box"! It's something that we "used to be's" did when we worked in broadcasting at stations that had more listeners then what most stations combined have today.

What I find unbelievable is the closed mindset of people like yourself who believes that anyone who once worked in broadcasting has nothing to offer since they've moved on to other careers.

If people like you are going to perpetuate the rant that 12+ means nothing, I'm going to perpetuate my annual rant by making the case there's nothing wrong with recognizing stations for their overall audience. Do I assume you're making the argument that the fact Legends grew to 4.6 is diminished because we're citing 12+ numbers? Absurd! First of all, these are the numbers most of us are allowed to see because we don't have access to a book. So, at least it offers us something to talk about and to base our opinion on fact as opposed to conjecture. Yeah, it's more prestigious for a station to be able to proclaim they're number one in the money demo of adults 25 to 54. And Legends probably doesn't have as strong a number in that demo as they do 35 to 64. But now I'm speculating because I don't have those numbers. At least the 12+ numbers show the station is on an upward trend. As I said before, I'd rather be WBEN and be able to proclaim on their top of the hour ID "This is the most listened to radio station in Western New York." You don't think that resonates with listeners and some less sophisticated advertisers? I don't hear WJYE proclaiming in on air liners that "This is the most listened to radio station for women aged 35 to 54." (And even that is conjecture because I don't have the book.) Only those of us in the industry and ad agency personnel care about the demos. For the rest of us, knowing what a station's overall audience is serves us quite well. And I'll make this promise. I'll give up on my rant if you'll give up on your rant. We all know how the radio industry operates, so frankly criticizing someone for using 12+ numbers because that's all we have is just plain tiring for some of us!

There are really no big surprises in the Rochester winter book. It’s still a battle between WHAM and WBEE for first and second place. And most observers will agree that Legends increase wasn’t unexpected; although to almost double their audience is something for that staff to indeed celebrate.

There you have it. After taking off the rose colored glasses after spending years in the industry, you develop a "normal" listener approach and consume radio differently. The fun & frustration stems from combining the experience with the ability to push the button on the dash for personal reasons, not professional. Career pros still have on the glasses. That's all.

Which is why I wear beer goggles on the weekend! Pabst, please. Chilled to 37 degrees.

;D

Uh-oh, I better get busy on the Stiffs thread for tonight. (Uses thespian over-the-top voice.) I see it waning, sinking, fading to black. Whhhhut ever shall become of ittttt. Oh dear. My legacy! Dashhhhed before my very eyes! The horrorrr, the hew-man-it-teeee!

Good lord. No more coffe. I better start cutting the lawn. Buh-bye.

Legends is great and successful for these reasons:

1) - It's not corporate radio
2) - It's full of surprises (Perry Como next to Rolling Stones)
3) - It's not sterile
4) - It's Unpredicatable
5) - Has a bright music director
6) - It does everything the other stations don't do.
7) - Lack of news and other morning-style non-music stuffings
(There's a huge segment who don't want to hear ANY news)
8) - It's a FUN station (news detracts from fun).
9) - It's imperfect. (Imperfection is a plus).

A WLGZ is needed in every market, done locally. A concept corporate clones will never understand

Even though I've listened online before, I was in Roch a few weeks ago and I remembered to tune Legends in. It just seems to work; it's bubbly, upbeat, and office/family safe. Sure, I can hear the need for addition-by-subtraction in some of the music. But Legends seems to bridge the gap between adult standards, oldies, and soft AC.

Complain all you want about their success, IMHO, we'll never know how entrenched Legends has become unless someone challenges them with a pure oldies or standards format on FM.
