The Wolf and what it really comes down to

Do what your listeners like! Plain and simply.

Sure it’s a business and there are things to worry about like ratings, commercial air time, sponsors and the careers of the people you employ as your on air personalities. However it shouldn’t be so hard to find the middle ground on all those things. There has to be a little give and take for a station to be successful.

So many stations seem to get caught up it the “business” of it all and stop taking the time to listen to the people who listen to them.

Having a station like the Wolf that truly seems to take the time to hear their listeners out is a great thing. It makes their listeners feel like they are a part of something. Listeners spend a good amount of their personal time listening to the radio. How great is it when a station can get the listener involved. I know I would rather have a station that’s knows me every time I call in and shows true interest in my opinion. I can’t think of any other station I have listen too in my life that I actually cared what happen to them when I turned off my radio.

Sure the mid day people can be a little blah, sure Fitz can sometimes seem like he is going on a one man stand up show, but that makes them feel like normal people to us the listeners. It gives us the feeling that they are people we would or do have as friends. I’ll take that over cheap entertainment from another station any day of the week.

They listen to ya huh? Okay lets do a test:

1. Do they play the same songs off the charts
that KMPS does about every four hours...Yep they do!

2. Do they claim to take requests, but only play them
if they are on their playlist...yep they do!

3. Do they play lots of commercials say how they listen
to you and then play what their consultant says...yep they do!

4. Is the station called the WOLF because that is an original
Seattle name or because their are 50 WOLF formats...yep there
are 50 WOLF stations.

5. Do they do "Speed Dates" because it is original...nope
three other stations in town do it too. KLSY was the last.

6. The morning guy is your "friend" really? Does he want
to hang with you after work? Does he spend time with your
kids? Does he even know you? Nope.

This is radio dude, WOLF is a generic station, with a Dallas
DJ hired to be "Seattle". If he really listens to
you and the market he will be here for years and have loyal
listeners because he is unique and does things no one else has
done in this market. He won't survive if he does generic bits
done time and time again in this town, makes fun of other talent
and makes you read these boring radio sites. Sorry to burst your
bubble. The best radio morning guys do show they care when they
become part of the community and provide unique entertainment.

I can see your point, I don't full agree but I see what your getting at.
I am not going to nit pick at the list you made, you have a better view of how things work on the inside then I do. It still stands that I think it matters more how listeners see the station. Peers and other people in the bizz can think what ever they like.

"The best radio morning guys do show they care when they become part of the community and provide unique entertainment."

there is not much that can be called unique entertainment any more. The best anyone can hope for is enterainment that feels new.

You really must live in another world. That or you're the morning guy trying to play yourself as a naive radio listener. Either way it's not workin' here.

The Wolf is just an attempt to get ratings and nothing more. They don't care about you, they don't want to hang out with you or worry about you after you hang up, like you said above.

They saw a country station in Seattle (KMPS) dominating the ratings books with no competition, so they gave it some. Plain and simple.

Wanna know how it really goes down at your beloved radio station? http://www.lisawood.blogspot.com. Love her or hate her, there's some good stories from that company that will open your eyes.

I think it's pretty obvious that these posts praising KKWF were planted. Nice try, but Ichabod Caine doesn't appear to be shaking in his boots...no, wait....nah, he just kicked off a little wolf doo. Never mind.....

You miss the point. It doesn't matter if they REALLY do care or not. It's that fact that people feel like they care. Most everything in life is based off perception. When people perceive they are listened to or cared for they enjoy it. Then you do something small that kinda shows you may care and they trust that you do care even if it is in some small way.

BRAVO Larry, BRAVO!

> I knew eventually you would bring her in to this...

Well, while I don't agree with most of the "opinion" pieces, the stories are so bad, you have to laugh. The "Oh Wow" book? Come on, that's priceless.

I've seen things similar to this occur in other forums(ie, the old Sci-Fi Channel forums). <P ID="signature">______________
