I'm among what I'm guessing is a VERY small group of people who couldn't care less if country music fell off the face of the earth tomorrow.
But from listening here and there just for the sake of knowing what's going on, I think WOLF has potential... they just haven't done much to cash in on that potential yet. Still no air talent? They're going to need a morning show that's LOCAL and GOOD. As lame and outdated as Becky and Tom are, a morning show that's "excellent" won't work if it's being piped in off the bird. You need to have a live, local morning show. It may not necessarily take much to outdo Becky and Tom, just 2 or 3 people who have good chemistry, and can relate to the listeners without sounding old and hokey.
And I've said time and time again, outside promotion is a must. Aside from just "knowing" the station is on the air, there sure doesn't seem to be much of an effort to let people know it exists. Didn't see anything at the State Fair (granted, never saw B104 doing anything there either). Haven't seen any TV spots. Maybe they're doing print? Wouldn't know because I seldom read the newspaper... I get most of my news online or on the air. No billboards along the heavily-traveled highways of Syracuse. Simply introducing concert acts and hoping people "find" the station isn't enough.
Website at wolf1051.com is also kinda tacky. Clear Channel's websites are tacky because they're overrun by advertising. WOLF's website is tacky because it's still mostly unfinished. (The tiled wolf background also reminds me of the days when the web first exploded and everyone had Geocities pages with all sorts of tacky images just because they could.) Many of the pages are still under construction/coming soon/etc. with blank areas and missing items. If you know you're going to launch a station, why not have all this crap done BEFORE you hit the air? Or were the owners just sitting around one night, blindly throwing darts at a board with different formats on it?
Granted, the station launch did generate some attention... but where's the momentum? Haven't heard much of anything about WOLF since it started. The launch could have been that much more impressive, if they did more pre-launch prep. Have the talent hired, have the website completed, and hit the ground with all systems running full-speed. This "let's just get it on the air and piecemeal the rest later" strategy is lame.
That's like going to a car dealer and saying, "I just need the chassis, the engine, the tires and one seat for now... and if things go well, I'll gradually come back for doors, windows, the other seats and the headlights over the next year or so."
