THE WORLDWIDE LEADER IS AT IT AGAIN

Once again a radio entity not run by radio people is trying to cut its way to growth.

It's more like they're trying to pay the bills. If revenue doesn't meet projections, you cut costs.

Let's remember one thing about 1250: Their hottest show is co-hosted by a guy who's 62 and another who is running himself ragged doing four hours of radio a day and holding down a full-time TV job at the same time.

ESPN's focus nationally is on the top 10 markets. They have turned Cowherd's show into "LA morning show" first, "national show" second. same goes for Mike & Mike, they seem to be almost exclusively concerned with what plays in NY, Chicago, Philly, Miami and Dallas (which would be the NBA). they used to do a great job with baseball, they are now almost going out of their way to ignore it.

I would be only mildly surprised if ESPN gave up and sold 1250.

Mike & Mike ignoring baseball talk in markets where the Yankees, Phillies and Mets play? Is the ESPN whose radio unit employs Golic & Greenie, the same ESPN with the alleged "East Coast bias" we are talking about here? Oh, and don't forget Greenie's allegiance to Gang Green (i.e. the Jets).

I will say this, I would be surprised if they ignored baseball the morning after that "near-perfect game" in Detroit.

ESPN selling 1250? Not if they get an FM stick first.

No, they did the show that morning almost exclusively on the baseball game.

And lately whatever the topic, they seem to be transforming into essentially a 1-topic show each day.

Someone has to sell for them to buy..... I can't imagine any full-market FM signal being available.

Seriously, what signal could they get? They're not getting one from CC or CBS...Renda only has 1 FM, Steel City could not survive with just one; 104.3 is Keymarket's only relatively full coverage signal, if they sell that they're out of business. K-Love buys a lot and doesn't sell much to my knowledge, WAOB just got started and has deep pockets behind them, Salem would be unlikely to sell WORD.

That's the market. What are they going to do, buy a Wheeling station? 103.5 from Keymarket? KVE from Stevens? None of those would get it done.

What station are they going to buy??

Everything has a price. If ESPN wants a full-market station more than one of the others wants to keep it, they'll make an offer the seller can't refuse.

I think those days are done. Radio companies are choking on debt now because they overpaid for stations.

remember, ESPN is owned by the "mouse" and they aren[t choking on anything but the hudge profits they have comming in from verious enterpirses. maby one of the companys that ARE "choking on debt" (eg cc) might entertain an offer to sell one of there FMs in the market. as for the"mouse" not careing about the Pittsburgh market....ESPN radio has always performed very well for them in the Pgh market.

Listen to the national content. They only care about the big markets now, and a very research-specific target audience... and it ain't Pittsburgh... of the top 50 markets, I'd bet the NBA's popularity ranks lowest here. And that's all they have talked about for the last two weeks, and it's probably all they are going to talk about until LeBron signs somewhere.

Just because they have money doesn't mean they're going to waste it overpaying for an FM station in market 25.
