The Yanks Are Coming!!!

If the New York Yankee farm club does locate here, which radio group will be beating down the doors to broadcast the games? Yeah, yeah, minor league baseball is tough to sell, not a big ratings winner, etc. That said, who would be the most likely candidate to broadcast the games?

P.S. The team is supposed to be soliciting for nicknames, one was already roundly rejected, The New York Yonkis, or the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yonkis. Imagine that. For the political implications of Yankee baseball, check out my blog, http://lulacpoliticaletter.blogspot.com/.

Love to see the Yankees coming, but the sheer luck of time and place played a huge role in this move. Certain people rolled the dice - we won. We could've just have easily lost. What's the old saying? Oh, yeah, "I'd rather be lucky than smart." Me, too, really.

Anyone feel like a name change? Red Barons never floated my boat. I don't have any great ideas for a new name, but I say a change wouldn't hurt. And for God's sake, please, please, please, no coal references, no anthracite references, no black diamond BS. Can't we move forward and shed that image?

We haven't dug coal here in over 40 years, it has no relevance to who we now are. And before anyone flames my rump, I love our heritage, but it is time to move along, we have so much to offer, let's do so. End of sermon, everyone say, "Amen."

P.S. If you want to split hairs, a colliery or two worked into the '70s locally. I know all about it.

According to this excerpt from the Times Leader, a nickname change is not in the works: "Reportedly, one of the demands that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plans to make is that they keep the Red Barons as its nickname—and the Yankees concur." Time will tell. What's in a name? Just win, and spin the turnstiles!

Ho Hummm.......

If Flo was a Ho, her maiden name was Hum, and she married a guy who's last name was dumb, then she'd be Flo Ho Humm Dumb.

Some rumors I read on other sports sites were the Orioles coming to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. I hear the Phillies are moving to Ottawa for 2007...then evidently moving to Allentown for 2008. Another rumor was the Mets coming to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (evidently the Mets are pulling out of Norfolk...they've been there since 1969)...and the Orioles going to Norfolk.

On the Orioles subject, their plan a few years back was to have all their farm teams in Maryland (except for their Rookie affiliate in Bluefield, WV). I guess that's not happening any time soon. They got Bowie and Salisbury built for that purpose.

When I worked for the Call Center on S. Main in Wilkes Barre, the company (Corporate Express, then the Order People) had another office in Salisbury, Md. Needless to say, in the summertime I volunteered to go down to that center and teach. There was Ocean City and the single A Shorebirds Stadium that was built by Frank Perdue. Great facility, great support for a single A ballclub. The Orioles, at least what I saw in Salisbury, did everything first class.

Well, then where are we at with this deal? Published reports claim to have confirmed that it's the Yankees, correct? Geez, I ain't even a real big baseball fan, but figure the Yanks would be huge here. Weren't the Clippers ALWAYS the biggest draw whenever they came to town?

The Clippers drew big when they came to the Stadium in the summer. But for the past two years, they've been scheduled in April or May when the kids were in school and the weather could be "iffy". So they never drew as well.
A news report says the Mets are touring the facility at Moosic too. They are leaving Norfolk and looking for a home too. Personally I'm hoping for the Yankees because with all the drama associated with that franchise, it would be a better story to follow. We'll know soon enough.

The relatively nearby location for any New York team or Baltimore, would make the stadium a good place for one of their teams.

It'll be the Yankees but I wish they'd reconsider the name change and the look. A fresh look, a new name, the premier baseball organization of all time? Nice.

I agree with the name and logo change. I remember many years ago someone in the Red Barons camp said they would never use the bi-plane or red baron image because it was too negative and that's not what they're named after. I guess someone with a marketing degree decided otherwise. Why don't they be like the WBS Penguins and change jerseys/logos every year to sell shirts. Their colors are Black and Gold so why is it Black and Blue hockey? To sell Jerseys!!!

Re: The Yanks Are Coming!!!...Shorebirds/Orioles

The Delmarva Shorebirds still exist. They are the "Low Class A" affiliate of the Orioles...in the South Atlantic League. During the first Shorebirds year, they were an Expos affiliate...then have been with the O's ever since. From what I understand, when Bowie and Delmarva were created, the idea was to have all the Orioles affiliates in Maryland...except for their long-time Advanced Rookie affiliate in Bluefield, West Virginia. From what I heard, eventually Bowie was to be the Triple-A affiliate...Delmarva be the Double-A team...and Frederick remain their "High Class A" affiliate...and doing away with the "Low A" team...leaving the Aberdeen franchise the "Short Season Class A" affiliate...and leaving the Advanced Rookie affiliate in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Teams such as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre only host teams such as Columbus once a year...mainly due to the travel distance, travel time, and cost. Pretty much, teams such as the Red Barons will play Columbus two series a year...one home and one on the road. Teams seem to play the out-of-division games early on in the season to get them out of the way. I would imagine the teams want to have their in-division games during the warmer months, because fans may be more interested in the in-division rivalries.

Bold Gold Media Group. :D

Jeez, where is everybody?

I cannot tell you how many times I've asked myself the same question. Just a guess, but it might be because this board has been shuffled around a couple of times, and then was MIA for a while, then gaining access was a nightmare(at least for me).

Yeah, I have one of their hats. Loved the stadium and them when I worlked out of Salisbury that I try to get down there once every two years. Thanks for the history of the team.

That and it brings to mind a rough and tumble brand of Hockey. I like the campaign. The lovely and talented Janice Dowdell told me she would like to see the Red Barons renamed the Bombers. I liked it so much I stole it and used it on the air without giving her credit. All I think of when I hear RED BARONS is a WW1 pilot who fought against us! One more thing, when I was doing traffic in Delmarva I went to a Shorebirds game. I had a great time. I just wish I didn't live near a chicken farm when I was there, talk about pungent odors, YIKES!
