The Year 2009

The Best
1)--87.7 Its Time to legalize WPOT
2)---98.5 The Sports Hub . I'm a fan of WEEI but competition is always great.
3)---WBCN Goodbye !
The Worst
1)--96.3 The Rose is Dead . WEEI is great but taking off The Rose ( one of the Best CHR/P in America ) is AWFUL.
2)---Power 104 was just a April Fools Joke. Boston need a legal station to go up against Clear Channel lame powerhouse ( kiss 108,Jamn 94.5 ).
3)--Every Year Christmas Music before Thanksgiving still S-CKS !

The Hub would be in first in the "bests" category. That's a no-brainer.

I'd move WBCN's demise to the "worsts," of course, but put it second behind the wilt of "The Rose" in Cape Cod as the worst radio move of 2009.

If rapking was referring to the WBCN farewell ceremony, I'd have to say that was one of the bests.

And honestly, I'd have to support the end of WBCN overall. It was a legendary station, but it's best days were behind it... far, far behind. I would have preferred to have seen WAAF go rather than BCN, but hey, look at the phoenix that's rising from the ashes.

BIGGEST EVENTS IN THE MARKET THIS YEAR:
1) WBCN signs off 104.1 and goes to 98.5 HD-2.
2) 98.5 The Sport Hub is born
3) Mix 98.5 becomes Mix 104.1
4) WAMG loses ESPN affiliate and goes silent for months.
5) WCRB is sold to WGBH and goes Non-Commercial
6) More pirates sign on and existing ones upgrade their signal and increase interference, and the FCC does nothing.
7) 103.3 no longer using "Oldies" moniker and begins skewing younger.
8 ) JAM'N 94.5 becomes Rhythmic Top 40 "Hip Hop and Today's Hit Music"
9) Jay Severin banned from WTKK temporarily for Racist remarks regarding Mexicans and the Swine Flu.
10) 'Power 104' April Fools joke

The fact that WAMG went silent for months because they had no clue what to put on that station says only one thing to me: bad management.

Re: WTKK, if you don't like what he's saying, change the station!!

5b) WGBH alienates folk and blues listeners by cancelling longtime shows, and classical listeners
by moving that music to a signal that deprives many of clear reception; Fri afternoon BSO
broadcast dropped, too

4b) Fox Sports to 98.5, ESPN to 850--at least a half decent signal carried non-Sox baseball playoffs

JAM'N 94.5 becomes Rhythmic Top 40 "Hip Hop and Today's Hit Music"

That's ALWAYS been WJMN's format. They may have changed their on air slogan, but not the format. It's always been a Rhythmic CHR. So is Hot 97 in New York by the way. Neither station is an "urban" station. Jam'n is much more concerned with attracting the rich white kids in the suburbs than how they do in Dorchester. It's ALWAYS been that way. When 97.7 was still urban, it was easy to tell the difference. Since WJMN hasn't had any urban competition for most of it's history, they've become the defacto "urban" station for the minority community, but technically it's not urban. They don't exist to uniquely serve the black community, and they play many songs that a mainstream urban station wouldn't play. The Rhythmic CHR format has changed over the last several years, and WJMN has made those adjustments along the way.

I must respectfully disagree.

JAMN's playlist has always been Rhythmic-leaning, but became a full Rhythmic this year. In 2007 when Brittany Spears made a comeback, they did not touch that. In 2009 when Brittany Spears made a comeback, they did touch that. If Lady GaGa had made her debut in 2007 they would not have touched "Poker Face" or any of that other garbage they call CHR radio.

It has not always been that way, in the 90's, JAMN's playlist was very Urban.

JAMN simply stayed with the times and what is hot, and headed in a Rhythmic direction for 2009.

It has not always been that way, in the 90's, JAMN's playlist was very Urban.

From the very beginning, WJMN has reported to the trade magazines as a CHR/Rhythmic. When hip-hop was the dominating genre at Rhythmic, as it was in the late 90's and most of the 2000's, Jam'n leaned that way as well. Over the last year, the format as a whole nationally reduced the amount of hip-hop and added more rhythmic pop, R&B, and in some cases even dance to their playlists. WJMN has kept up with those changes. Their playlist has always stuck very close to the national CHR/Rhythmic playlists. They've never been an urban station. Ever. They may not play as much hip-hop as you would like these days, but that doesn't mean that a format change happened. They are, and always have been a Rhythmic CHR station.

You sure it would be ranked that high Karson?

j/k ;D

Worst event of the year---The return of Mustard and Johnson. I'm still shocked as to why 'EEI would put the worst show in the history of all media back on the air.

Yes. WBCN was trash for last 5 years ( or longer ) . WBCN farewell ceremony was great. A garbage station went out on a high note .
