The Yotes on 9~Ten (again)

When you read what iHeart is giving the Yotes, it sounds pretty good. If I'm the team's marketing director, I'm not all that interested in the play by play:

https://radioink.com/2019/08/13/fox-sports-910-phoenix-new-radio-home-for-coyotes/

The team is getting a free app with content provided by iHeart. That may be worth more than live play by play.

Hey Doc! What do your students at the media hut think about free apps?

iHeart is pretty much offering the Coyotes everything they're doing for the LA Kings, except they're also airing the games on 910. LA's games are only on the app.

The NHL in general has embraced streaming and new media.

They like 'em...especially the Media Hut app that allows you to superimpose a fez on your head to impress your friends. Another feature is placing your likeness behind the wheel of a '76 AMC Gremlin. Thank you Al Gore for inventing the internet!

So 910's trade-off to get the 'Yotes was the Westwood One NFL night game package (including the "Big Game").

For my part, I’m glad that _all_ the Coyotes games will be on the radio. I like to listen and I always have a radio.
Too, 910 is one of the only AM HD stations, so voice clarity is nearly as good as an analog FM broadcast.

The downsides are that the vocals on 910’s ESPN(?) feed sound _horribly_ metallic or something, so I hope the game broadcasts will sound better. Plus, I frequently lose the HD signal at night. :-/

Yes, the 910 KGME signal is limited, especially in the East valley at night. Day time, I can get a solid HD signal lock in the car, at night, it drifts in and out (mostly out). As you can see from their night-time signal coverage map, if you are south of the valley and in Eloy, you are in luck! If you are in north Mesa and Scottsdale, though, you will have some serious trouble with their night-time signal and since most Coyotes games are at night, that coverage is worse than what they were getting with Arizona Sports 98.7 / KTAR 620 AM and KTAR 92.3 FM.

https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KGME&service=AM&h=N&z=i

Also, for those outside Phoenix, it will be harder to pick up the game. Not sure how this will effect ESPN Flagstaff, but they played all the Coyotes games up there on 600 KVNA-AM and 104.7 K284BO FM. KGME is not coming in up there!

Finally, I know you can stream from your phone (if cell service allows), but it’s nice to travel and still listen to some of the Arizona sports games on 620 AM. I’m in North County San Diego right now and it’s nice to be able to hear a strong 620 AM signal broadcasting the Diamondbacks game. The KTAR signal was coming in like gangbusters! Pros and cons for the Coyotes switching back to KGME, but their signal limitations are frustrating and still makes me wonder why Clear Channel has not put KGME on an FM translator or, at the very least, an HD subchannel. That continues to blow my mind that KGME 910 AM is NOT on an HD subchannel or FM translator when 1230 KOY AM is!

I’m in the far west valley, and while my car will lock the AM HD signal after dark, the portable I use at home only will sometimes, when facing the right way, etc.

It’ll be interesting to see how things go. I used to try to stream games while I was at home, but I can’t get that many now, and I don’t want to be tied to the computer anyway. I won’t, and can’t afford the data to, use a smartphone for streaming like that.

Where does that leave The Freaks with Kenny and Crash? Out on the street?

They just replaced bad with the worst. Less than 15 years ago 910 was the home of Gambo and Ash, and Bruce Jacobs. How the mighty have fallen.

As for 1060, Hubbard might as well convert it to all-digital like their experimental station in the Washington, D.C. area.

As long as the rent checks from KIHP are good, why would Mother Hubbard sell? Maybe The Donald will buy Guadalupe and redevelop it. It's not as cold as Greenland and you can play golf year round there!

I didn't call for the Mother to sell 1060, just to modernize it and move KAZG's format over there. Just think...CD-quality, static-free oldies. Then the former home of the Lamptimer can become a full-time "dollar-a-holler" station. 1440 can't be converted to all-digital because of their antenna.

Or 1060 giving Mike Jurecki drive time. That would be Hubbard getting the last laugh.

We have a hockey team?

We actually have more than one.

ASU has a Division 1 hockey team (2 years old now I think) and they are playing respectable against the very best teams in college hockey. It would be worth a visit to one of their games if you can't get to the West Side for the Coyotes.

Well, 910 has moved Jody Oehler to morning drive (where he can go after Wolfley on "the other station" instead of Gambo), and they hired (yes, hired, not received a check like in the case of R&M) Dan Sileo to do afternoons. The news is on the site not to be mentioned on RadioDiscussions, by the way.

The missing piece is an FM translator (and since people have said that 93.7 is "married" to 1230, that's unlikely to happen).

I'm going to just leave this here.

It could, eventually. A translator granted in a modification/revitalization window, like K229DB, has to broadcast the assigned station for 4 years. Once that's up, it's fair game. (Example — a revitalization xltr reassigned to a mirror an HD subchannel after completing 4 years) I believe it'll be about another year (fall 2020) before K229DB has spent four years with its station.

Who knows. A year from now, they might have given up with their expanded local program lineup.

Also, Dan Patrick is moving to KDUS from 6-9am, inconveniencing listeners during the wintertime when their 500-watt directional nighttime signal lingers into the 7:00 hour.

It's only a problem for those who live south of Elliot Rd. -- basically Ahwatukee, Chandler, and Gilbert, and anyone who commutes on the 202 Santan or I-10 south of the towers. At least there's no longer an issue with IBOC hash from KNX like there used to be.

910 and 1580 have bigger problems with their night signals than 1060 does. 910 has a null towards parts of Scottsdale and Mesa (where the hockey fans are), while 1580 might as well be off the air at night. If they don't fix/relocate those translators, or build a couple more, they're toast.
