THE YULE LOG

I know that TRIBUNE started THE YULE LOG in 1966 on WPIX-11 in NEW YORK, but THE YULE LOG has spread NATIONALLY! I live in NORTHERN CALIFORNIA and on CABLE TV here, I am able to pick up THREE TV STATIONS with THE YULE LOG. TRIBUNE owned KTXL FOX 40 SACRAMENTO has the OFFICIAL TRIBUNE VERSION on CHRISTMAS DAY from 4:30AM-9:AM. KICU TV 36 SAN JOSE has their version but it is called THE HOLIDAY LOG and it is broadcast on CHRISTMAS DAY from 7:AM-NOON. But the big surprise is that THE YULE LOG is back on KOFY TV 20 SAN FRANCISCO. KOFY was the first TV STATION in the West Coast to broadcast THE YULE LOG, which I believe started in 1990 and lasted until 1997. Now KOFY TV 20 has brought it back and it will be TWENTY HOURS OF IT!!! Broadcast on CHRISTMAS EVE from 1:pM-8:pM and again from 10:pM-MIDNIGHT and then on CHRISTMAS DAY from 8:AM-9:AM and again from 10:AM-8:pM. I am curious, Is THE YULE LOG broadcast on KOFY the same YULE LOG (FILM AND MUSIC) featured on the TRIBUNE TV STATIONS? Also are there any other NON-TRIBUNE TV STATIONS broadcasting THE YULE LOG or similar?

I seem to recall that the last couple of years MSG Network (don't ask me how i know that one! :)) has broadcast at times up to like 12 or 13 hours WORTH of Yule Log - just like in the old days... 8) and as long as we're talking about the "old" Yule Log, i also seem to recall that one of our local NYC stations, WNYE-TV (Channel 25) has broadcast several hours worth of it each day Christmas week or something...

WATL/Atlanta (former Tribune...now Gannett) will air the Yule Log 3-9AM on Christmas Day. It is a newer version, although they aired the WPIX version while still a Tribune station.

WGN America will air the Yule Log continuously from 9 PM Christmas Eve to 6 AM Christmas Day...according to the listings on my cable box.

MOJO (which just shut down at the beginning of the month) offered an HD Yule Log for 24 hours on Christmas Day.

If it was up to your local fire dept they would show the Yule Log for a few minutes, then show a spark or ember jumping out, catching your Christmas tree on fire, your pets running out of the house in flames and then your house burning down. Then they'd show a slide saying "ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY AND NEVER LEAVE A FIRE UNATTENDED"

In Tampa, Bright House's Bay News 9 has been showing the Yule Log for over ten years on Christmas Eve. The music comes from BHN all Christmas music Select Channel. The "log" (same one each year) has been known to come in #1 in the ratings for the night beating every other channel. This year, Yule log is also availabe through December on their On-Demand channel so you can use it at any time.

WATL's radio partner is top 40 WSTR-FM (longtime WXIA/WATL promotional partner), although they don't simulcast. The all-Christmas station in Atlanta is AC WSB-FM, which would be a more logical partner. (WPIX-TV simulcasted their yule logs with their then FM sister in the beginning).

With WGN in HD now, I wonder if they will be showing a newer version this year to go along with those classic radio shows.

FOrget the TV. I saw "The Yule Log" on DVD in the dollar store.

Question about the WPIX Yule Log, wasn't that originally from Gracie Mansion, the Mayors fireplace?

The "original" Yule Log was shot at the Mayor's mansion in NYC. However, the film was somehow destroyed. The film Tribune has been showing since the early 70's on WPIX and other stations was a redo shot on a set in California in the middle of summer.

There are two versions Tribune has used recently...the 70's redo version with classic Christmas music...and a modern 90's version with modern Christmas music (which is also used by other owners and stations like Gannett's WATL). WGN used the 70's version the last few years.

WMYT/55 (MY12) in Charlotte will broadcast their own yule log for 20 hours. They've had a yule log the past several years, but this year it will be available in glorious HD.

20 hours of programming, showing a log burning in the fireplace all in glorious HD!

Considering the state of the economy, they may be on to something.
Wicked Cheap Programming!

Every month in 09, compelling TV: (I'll start)

January-20 hours showing a Snowman ;D

... a snowman.

Melting.

Like the economy!

Better than infomercials, though.

Ain't That The Truth! :D

SOuth Carolina Educational TV (statewide PBS network) even got in the act, airing a yule log on one of their digital subchannels (the SC Channel) complete with instrumental Chistmas music.

WATL (Gannett) Atlanta - same SD Yule Log with 80's-today Christmas music that stays the same - always starts out with Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You". WATL/WXIA is HD news...yet no HD log.

I heard part of a news story on CBS from satrist Mo Rocca saying that this was the new WPIX Yule Log, and he talked to a manager at WPIX that revealed that there were a lot of complaints on Internet message boards even before it aired wanting to keep the classic log with music alive. I suspect WPIX, WGN, and KTLA aired the new version.

Only question...was it HD or SD?

Given that I have two Christmases - one with my city dad, brother and his three sons in the suburbs (brother's home), the other with my suburb mom, sister and her five kids (two boys, three girls) in the city - I don't ever have time to even think about watching any Yule Log, and I'm not sure that any of my nieces or nephews would appreciate having any of their TV sets switched to the Yule Log in Boston. I'll try to think about the Yule Log next Christmas if given the opportunity.
